Hey - I'm driving to Wichita, KS tomorrow night/Friday for the weekend. My 99 Limited I think is ready to roll. I go back and forth to Indiana 500 miles RT but this is longer.

It's going to be hot and about 1400-1600 miles RT. I was going to put an extra timing belt/water pump/thermo in as a just in case. Just got the oil changed. I've got 140,000 on it.

Anything else that may be needed you'd advise?

I can always take the car instead but I don't think it'd be as much fun. Just better mpg probably.

I just finished a 4,000 mile road trip in my '97 with 180K, didn't even need to open the hood on the trip (except when I decided to remove the bug-shield halfway through). Not a drop of oil lost.

Point being is that if you're up to date on maintenance, just jump in and drive :).

Agreed. I did a 1,500 mile road trip to AR in March in my '99 that has 260k miles. I had the brakes checked and changed the oil beforehand, but had no issues. Your 4Runner has a long way to go!

Can't really think of anything other than making sure all the fluids are at the right levels and check the spare tire psi.

Ok, there's one thing to do before you go. People don't think about the spare until they get a flat, but it's been sitting there unused for 10 years and has no air pressure at that point. I see that happen all the time on I-80.

If it's possible, have the AC system checked to be sure it's full of refrigerant. Outside of that ( and everything else mentioned here) just hit the road and enjoy the journey!

I went on a 9,000 mile road trip in my 3rd gen last month. When I left it had 248k miles on it. 257k when I got back. I drove from Alabama to Cape Flattery, Washington the most northwestern point in the contiguous United States, with lots of other stops along the way. I went through 19 states, did 2 oil changes along the way and didn't have a single issue.

Threads like this make me laugh. At this point, it's as much if not more about the maintenance that's been done to the truck. They're all 16 years old at least at this point, if you take care of them they'll take care of you.

Is your radiator original? If it is, it's on borrowed time.

I always pack a mechanics tool set, breaker bar, extra oil/trans fluid/coolant..just for peace of mind in case of anything ever happening! Because commuting to and from work is one thing but a long trip is different..we all took a trip to southern Illinois then to nashville Tennessee and a few weeks before that I had done all the timing belt/drive belts/water pump/pulleys everything went great even with the hot southern heat! Not to mention everything was still original at 201k. Just checked the oil every fill up and coolant..just my .02! Hadn't taken the truck on any trip prior and just wanted peace of mind! Good luck!

Good point. Also a good idea to make sure the mechanism is not seized and it can be cranked down.
Even if you get a service to change it, they still have to get it down.
