TRD Air Filter is Available

I was at the dealer the other day getting the union to extend my breather for the rear diff and asked again about the TRD air filter - he said he found a part number and would order it to see if it was the correct one (I was skeptical since TRD told me a couple days before it was not out yet). Much to my surprise it came in today and I've already installed it - here are a couple pictures - one with the part number.

Retail is $81.00 - I got it for $58.

A local dealer ordered it for me from their parts department - Toyota of Dallas - if you called them they could probably order one for you and ship it to you.

I think it would be easiest to go to your dealer and have them order one as long as they were willing to sell for the same price.

Yes - it is very similar to a K&N filter

Is it built by K&N? I'm not a fan of K&N. I don't think they are bad; just not any better than anything else. I wonder if Toyota makes them to get in on the K&N action or if they simply get it from K&N.

I called the dealer and their response was "they should come oiled" but I dont trust the dealers, so I hope someone can clarify that for me.

This pic is EXACTLY what a K/N drop in looks like. You can see the gauze/fabric element between the screen. I only know of a handful of companies that offer a non-oiled filter in the aftermarket scene, but those are most always some type of foam looking material.

Looks like the TRD filter oil is yellow so it looks pre-oiled to me...

Just and FYI... I took mine out due to a high pitched noise at right around 2000 rpm's - was very slight but one i noticed it very annoying to me - took my dealer and myself a good amount of time to link the noise to the filter but they were great and did not give up until we found the cause. It is nothing wrong with the filter -- just harmonic noise generated by the air flow - I thought it was electronic feedback from the radio at first but after taking a stock filter and my TRD for a ride at the same time the noise was gone after putting the stock filter back in.

TRD Air Filter

The filter does come pre-oiled and is good for normal paved road driving for 25,000 miles per TRD. If you off-road, you need to check it periodically and clean/oil it as necessary.

The cleaning kit comes with a cleaning solution and oil. The process is simple and takes about five minutes.

TRD's test show about a 7 HP gain-similar to CAI intakes or other mods.

I just put in my K&N yesterday, and it does it too. Almost sounds like a turbo charger...a whistling sound right around 2k to 3k. It is bugging me, and I might take mine out too, but thinking that it might get quieter later as it "settles" in???? Wishful thinking?

I doubt that the TRD air filter will give a 7hp gain..........

When I had my Tacoma I had the TRD S/C, Headers and Cat Back and saw gains but the K&N Air Filter did little to nothing. There is actually a LOT of negative press that K&Ns allow more dust to pass through but I'M not a technical expert.........just a google geek who researches a lot of stuff.

Most intakes from my experience usually give you the perceived feeling of performance due to the change in sound as a result of the air intake (as a few have mentioned) and a slight increase in mpg's..........that's about it though.

Curious to see what everyone who owns one thinks about the performance gain whether it be HP difference or MPGs.

I also seriously doubt the proclaimed gain in overall HP, but I do think throttle response MIGHT be better now, and I like the more aggressive sound. As for MPG, which is why I really got it, I am skeptical too, but it never hurts to give it a shot. As for the filter getting more debris in, I think that is fair to assume, but there is still a fixed filter in the manifold that is kind of like a backup, and the thing is closed off from major debris anyways...if I had the K&N CAI apparatus, I would be MUCH more worried about debris because it is more exposed to the elements.
