TRD Center Caps on 17' FJ Wheels

They will absolutely work on the stock 17" SR5 wheel with some modification, just follow the advice in this thread. I did mine over a year ago and they turned out pretty nice. The wheel coating is still holding up strong, as well.

wow! looks really good! looks like it required alot more cutting on the stock sr5 wheels than on the fj wheels i used. but nice work!

Completed this today finally with alot of dremel madness. Went a different way with it then described above as not as much as shown above is needed to make them fit. Just a dremel blade width triming of the bottom and then some angle grinding to match the closest part of the rim that touches. So instead of cutting a straight line between bolt areas i just trimmed a bit inbetween. If that kinda makes sence ?:shrug:.

could you post a couple more angles of the cap? IE side and back?

I used the trd retaining rings and they worked fine. driven 10K+ miles on them without any problems

Were the little springs on your retainer ring bent or kinked once applied ?
Did you put the centre caps on the tire then the rings in the cap or manipulate the caps into the tire with ring already on ?

i put the rings on the caps then put them on the wheels, so caps/rings went on together.

and if done successfully, the retainer rings will be kinked.

putting on caps without rings is easy, they snap right on without any trouble but i was worried it would fall off, so I put in that extra effort to seat the caps while the rings were on there, putting them both on at the same time

I just looked through my photos. Sorry I don't have any additional angles of the cap itself.

Glad to help. I wouldn't cut off any less than that picture. At the end of the day, I still could have stood to trim another millimeter off. The trimmed TRD cap doesn't clip into the wheels like the stock caps. It's just a friction fit, but even that's an understatement. It took a fair amount of muscle to get them to seat properly after I installed the tension ring. They haven't budged and it's been a year, including ~10,000 miles and one Alaskan winter.

I did not paint the caps, just the wheels. I ordered the gray caps and it's almost a perfect color match to Duplicolor Graphite Wheelcoat. Below was before I trimmed the caps, but it illustrates just how close the colors are.

"Friction fit" is actually a perfect way to describe this mod. It was really a pain in the ass getting them to seat for myself as well.

These center caps were simply not meant for these sr5/fj wheels, but with enough effort, you can definitely make it work

I cut where you instructed to cut and it ended up cutting too much. the grooves on the wheels for the caps to click in to don't line up with the tabs from the caps with this deep of cut. they went on with a lot of effort but the bump on the tabs are passed the grooves in the wheels when pressed in.

Did you experience this as well? Maybe you did this intentionally? I'm not trying to call you out on a bad write up I just want to know how it went in for you and if your tabs line up with the grooves of the wheel.

The tabs do in fact line up with the grooves of the wheel. It was a pain in the ass to get them in, but I've driven well over 20k on these wheels and the center caps have been fine and sit perfectly with the wheels.

Oh well that's weird. I cut them even with those perpendicular tabs. When I put them and the plastic edge fits flush with the wheel I can see that the tab bump is a couple mm passed the wheel grooves. You were right about them being a mother f-er to get on. Maybe we have different dimensions on our wheels or center caps for some reason. Although, it is staying on. Thanks for the write up though. I would not of thought about the idea. I will cut mine a little less and report back.

Okay so I found our discrepancy. We were aiming for different goals of fitment. I was trying to get the edges to seat flush with flat lip where the stock caps sit. Of course these caps are a lot bigger so you went the route of resting the edges on the beginning of the slope of the spoke. I folded the TRD sides in to squeeze in the space which made it go in further and thus the tabs passed the notches. I tapered my edges as an experiment and can't go your route now, which I agree is the better one.

I actually almost got the plastic part from the stock caps to fit into the TRD caps. This would have been perfect for fitment! I bet it can happen. Just a lot of work.
