TRD Coil vs. OME 881 Front Lift

TRD Coil vs. OME 881 Front Lift Question? **Updated with Pics**

I’ve been researching lifts for a few months now and have narrowed it down to just 2 options that fit my needs. Really only looking for 2” of lift, mainly on-road duty with occasional camping trips.

Option 1: Tundra Bilstein 5100 Front/Rear, Tundra TRD Coil-Front, OME 906-Rear.

Option 2: Tundra Bilstein 5100 Front/Rear, OME 881-Front, OME 906-Rear.

I’ve seen people running the Tundra TRD front coils, with what seems like great results. My question is do they really ride that much better than the OME 881 coil? I’m looking for people who have run both the Tundra TRD coil and the OME 881. I know ride quality is completely subjective, but just to give you an idea, I’m coming from lowered cars with nice coilovers setups so I know stiff lol. Any opinions would be great!

Check out a thread by Rickashay. In depth comparison between the TRD/OME setups man. Probably the reason you have not gotten a response. That and only 6 hours have elapsed...

Stiffness is different on lowered cars. There is more "bounce to the ounce" / travel in a stiff lifted truck.

I got 906 rears and oem front springs.. see my sig..

They work fine.. Given I feel the front with oem coils with bilstein feels pretty good.

Im not sure how much better the TRD tundra coils are.

I do like to know if the TRD tacoma would fit and work.

The 906 is stiff but not unbarable though any stiffer Id get rid of them, but I dont want that stiffness in the front.

Yeah I've read Rickashay's post about the comparison. Just wondering if someone has made the swap while using 906 or 890's in the rear. He was also not running sways and the LC coils in the rear which I'm sure would have a pretty big effect.

Thanks for the replies thus far!

IIRC, the fronts of either setup is pretty similar, its the rear of the OME suspension that people like to complain about (jarring, stiff, etc).

So yea..

I kinda almost want to load my truck for a week in the rear so the 906 would weaken a bit.. :/

OP.. for whats its worth the 906 is fine.. There are not many options for a 2'' lift in the rears.. I with eibach made progressive springs for our 4runners..

they would probably beat out the competition.

You're the first ive heard that wasnt just in LOVE with their 906's.. i went with 890s and the OME shocks (60028) and it was jarring at first, but its broken in nicely and ive played with tire pressure to make it pretty comfortable.. unloaded its okay/nice... with stuff in the back (levelled, since i have rake) it rides like damn butter.

Yes. I just got them I over a month now. I'm sure they will settle in better. I like them and definitely worth it. But I don't load my truck. Its just me in it most of the time. I'm sure if I lower my tire pressure to 33psi I'll rude a lot better. Currently at 37. I'll take the stiffness to save 1mpg in gas. Lol

I think I pretty much know what to expect with the 906's. It's gonna be a firm ride. I just don't know if the Tundra TRD Coils ride that much better to justify the extra cost of the coils. The tundra coil is progressive but I do believe that it has a higher springrate than the 881.

I've already ordered the Bilstein 5100 for the Front/Rear. And i'll probably get the Tundra TRD coils based on all the positive reviews. This is my DD, so I only want to do this once lol.

I just installed OME 880's w/ Tundra Bilstein's on 2nd perch (#1) up front and OME 906's/ 4Runner Bilstein's in the rear.

I gained about an 1.75" up front and 2 1/4" in the rear- giving me a nice 1/2" rake.

I like the stiffer ride that the OME setup provides over the OEM coils. Less body lean and better road feedback. FWIW

Another question? If I was to run the tundra coil on the 2nd notch with the 5100, then a 10mm trim packer on the rear with the 906 would I end up with a level stance or slight forward rake?

I'm just not sure how much each notch of the 5100 yields?

I just wanted to post an update since my original post. I decided to go with the Tundra TRD/906 springs and Bilstein 5100's all the way around.

I got around to installing everything this weekend and all I can say is WOW. The ride is perfect in my opinion. I was really worried about the rear 906's being really stiff, but I couldn't be happier. This is how the 4runner should have come from the factory!

This gave me exactly 2" of lift with about 0.5" of rake. I'm waiting on the weather to clear up and I'll snap a few pictures.

For anyone looking for a mild lift, this should defiantly be at the top of your list!

Nice. Looking forward to the pics.

Just a quick picture of the lift from this morning. Still on the stock tire (265/70/16). Will post some better ones soon!

subscribed. This is the kind of mild, dd lift I'd like to do. Looking forward to a better pic on level ground. It already looks great, though!

I paid right at $750 total.

$320 for the bilsteins (got a Black Friday deal at Ajusa.com)
$170 for the 906's
$240 for the Tundra Coils (buddy is a parts guy at Toyota so I got the hookup)
$18 for the Tundra isolators

Not the cheapest lift but this is my DD so I wanted to use some decent stuff...

bsdoig: looking forward to pictures, this sounds like exactly what I'm looking for too. Any chance you could share some part numbers for the Bilsteins and the Tundra parts? Also, looking forward to some pictures. What size tire are you going to run? Glad it worked out the first time around. Makes the job that much more satisfying, doesn't it?
