TRD Coil vs. OME 881 Front Lift

Awesome thread. Thanks for the details. Time for new shocks and springs on my '00 4Runner. Question for clarification. You have Tundra TRD Billstein 5100s in all corners, Tundra TRD Coils up front and Old Man Emu 906 from 4Runner in rear or are the 906 for the Tundra?

906 for a 4runner

If you go this route

get some 20mm levelers for the 906 OMEs in the rear. if your on the lowest 5100 perch using the TRD coils up front this will give you just enough rake.

Feels pretty solid with as much "wobble" you would expect from a lifted truck. Never feels unstable though.

What do you mean when you say this? I am getting the same wobble with my worn out 200k suspension in the front end that if I don't have a death grip on the steering wheel I'll get bucked into the ditch. I guess I just thought new suspension should make it at the least, way stiff but also planted and sure footed.

Yea you get lift if thats what your asking.

Is the ride quality/comfort/stiffness comparable between the Tundra coils, stock 4Runner coils, and the 99 tall coils? How about when you preload the stock coils/99 talls on the 2nd or 3rd perch of the 5100s - how does that affect comfort/stiffness?

99 coils and tundra coils are oem stock coils. They are give a good road ride experience. The higher the perch the more stiff the coil will get. You usually want to stay on lowest perch and maybe one up at most.

IIRC, the fronts of either setup is pretty similar, its the rear of the OME suspension that people like to complain about (jarring, stiff, etc).

So yea..

I've seen a lot of guys go Tundra TRD on the front, 906 in rear, 5100 all the way around. If the 906 is the biggest complain about the OME set-up, why is it so commonly used for guys who want less stiff, more comfort? And if the OME front is not so bad, why are guys using the Tundra TRD so often, and not OME coils up front?

It seems 906 are VERY popular, even though often complained about (maybe really the complaints are for the OME shocks, not coils). Does anyone complain about OME 880/881? Personally, I've been leaning towards 880/906 with 5100. Are the Tundra TRD coils going to be that far superior to the 880 front, assuming 906 rear?

I'm going on 7months on mine and have zero complaints.

I have thought about moving the front's up one perch on the shocks and changing to 890's in the rear.....for a little more height.

I saw in your sig that you went up to 890s. Was it purely for more lift? Was there anything unsatisfactory with the 906 rear? I have all my parts here and installing this weekend. I've been nervous that the 906 would not provide enough rake with the TRD front, but you and Speedy both indicated 1/2" rake, with which I'd be happy! Any drawbacks looking back?

I had no issues with the 906's. Paired with the 5100's I though it rode pretty dang good. Firm but not too stiff. I made the switch purely for more height. In my opinion is they ride pretty much the same with no noticeable differences.

When I made the change I also moved the front up one perch. My rationing behind the change was wanting to go with a bigger tire in the future. I was replacing ball joints and TRE's so I decide to go ahead and move the front up and bump up to the 890.

I have no regrets going with the TRD and 906's. For a mild setup it's pretty much perfect for daily driving.

That's great to hear! I've heard mainly positive things about the ride from this set-up, particularly for a DD. I've been most nervous about the stance, and whether it'd be negative, level, or slightly positive rake. I'm going to install it without rear trim packers and hope for that 1/2" positive rake. Glad it worked well for you!

So, I'm about to pull the trigger on buying another set of 5100s to replace the very leaky set I have now (I've been told it was the Eibach spring's fault, not the 5100's). I'm going for the OP's whole setup because I already have had 890's in the back with 5125s.

I'm curious, OP, did you get Tundra Bilstein 5100's as well, or are these the ones made for the Tacoma/4runner?

I'm also wondering that since my 890s are about 3.5 years old now, if I should bother with the 2nd perch on the front, or if it'll probably be an acceptable amount of positive rake if I leave the front on the lowest perch because the rears have likely settled quite a bit.

Thoughts? Thanks!

Jeep JK spacer

Just curious if there would be any issues with the 4runner using Jeep JK 10mm spacer in place of the rubber isolator on top of the front spring, I ran this on my previous Tacoma without issue just not sure if the 4runners are any different. It got me about 2.25" on the Tacoma with the Bilsteins on bottom perch. There should be pictures attached.
Thanks,

Sorry, I posted this here because I guess I am not able to start a new thread yet.

Anyone running just the Old Man Emu 881 (front) and 906 (rear) on the stock shocks? Mine are in good shape and just want a little lift. Thoughts?

I was under the impression that combo might give you slight negative rake. The 880 is the same weight, just a shorter spring. Right now I have 906 rears and I'm not sure what the front is, but I have about an inch or so of rake. I'll probably do 880s in the front once my wife lifts the car spending moratorium after Christmas.

bsdoig, can you tell us the hub to fender before and after measurements? I am looking at doing this same lift on my 98'

When you say 'negative' rake, you mean higher in front? That's no bueno...

My understanding, and take this with a grain of salt, because I do not have the 880s or 881, I've only installed the 906 and 5100 in the rear. The 906 gives you around 2 inches of lift. Mine was sagging a bit so I got a bit more. Supposedly it settles to around 1.75 inches. My stance right now is great, and I have around a 1" rake from back to front. Mine is a 98, but it sits higher than the 2000s and 2001s I've seen, so I think my front is taller to begin with.

Supposedly the 880 is around 1.5 inches of lift, probably a little less once settled also, so - the 906 880 combo gives you a slight lift with about a .5" rake - front to back. The 881 is the same weight coil - so it's made in the same way as the 880, just slightly longer, giving around 2-2.5 inches of lift.

So at BEST, the 881 gives you a level stance - and possibly a slightly higher front than back. The 880 gives you a noticeable rake.

The 883 is actually made for more weight in the front, and still providing that lift.

So, at least for me, I'm going to go with the 880s in the front, and leave that slight rake.
