TRD Intake available now!

So Just installed mine tonight, A HUGE THANKS TO TOYSTRY for his detailed write-up instalation post. Everything went smooth and together with the BORLA cat back, this thing screams at WOT. I am getting some kind of flutter noise at WOT from the passenger side so not sure what that is. All in all i am happy with it, looks nice too. Cant coment on the MPG yet because I keep stomping on the accelerator.[/QUOTE]

Just ordered my Borla Cat Back and hopefully it will arrive in time for a weekend install. Cannot wait! Glad your setup is working out/sounding awesome.

So I just installed my BORLA Cat-back on Friday. The install would have been easier with a lift and an extra set of hands, but doing it alone I was able to get the job done in a little over an hour. I, like all others, had to cut the stock pipe in order to get it removed. Other than that, everything else was very straight forward. This thing sounds great and I'm happy with the purchase! The BORLA paired with the TRD Intake give the truck a much nicer tone and it's exactly what I was missing (besides the Supercharger) from my previous 4Runner. Money well spent.

TRD CAI and MPG

Anyone other than me notice a DECREASE in MPG after the TRD install? I have found about a 1-1.5 decrease since the install over mixed driving compared to the OEM. Not putting my foot in it, either...

Unfortunately we only have a 2WD dyno here, and I have a limited, but id really like to see the gains of these vs some of the others. I snagged an Airaid when I bought my truck and love the intake, I swear the same road to work every day, same fuel etc, I picked up a mpg, and a SOTP feel up top, but I cant handle the resonance. Towing a trailer for a few hours up a hill made me want to gouge my ears out since the truck pretty much sat at the resonance point the entire way up the mountain. Hopefully the TRD doesnt have that issue, but before yanking a $350 intake off to buy a $400 one, I want to see some results!

I wanted the borla, but ordered the magnaflow because it was supposed to be 3 inch... turned out its also 2.5 and they had a misprint on their website :gun6: . I ended up just building most of the Ypipe and mid section myself and using their muffler and overaxle pipe, but I was annoyed to say the least. I run two mufflers though, I wanted the performance and fuel economy, but stock level sound.

Not to be a negative nancy, but any "gains" you see on the dyno are probably going to be small and well under the dyno's error margin, so I doubt it's going to be anything conclusive. You can dyno the same exact engine 10 different ways and get 10 different readings, so trying to discern a power curve difference between aftermarket intakes on a dyno would probably be futile.

There's only so many ways you can plumb the intake pipe and filter it, all will be within a few hp of one another if not exactly the same, and possibly a very very slight shift in the power curve.

If sound is what you are looking for, I am sure the TRD will not disappoint. But if you're really just concerned about sound why not put the original factory air box back in and punch a few holes into the air box resonator (upstream of the filter media). Free, vrooom vrooom sound, and probably about the same performance gains :)

You would be surprised how accurate and consistent mustang dynos are... and unlike a dynojet, tricks dont work as well. As far as the sound, thats why im considering ditching the airaid... I like having a quiet truck that doesnt sound modified, I just want the gains in power and fuel economy. If the TRD is silent with similar gains to what I have, it may be a worthy investment, but as others have said, it looks just like a stock air box with a higher flowing tube. I could likely modify my airaid to accept the stock air box, but I like the open element filter better.

Does anyone know if it fits the 2016 4R TRD PRO and if Toyota will still cover my warranty?

Yes and Yes*,

*If you are in an accident and the air box gets destroyed they(insurance) will likely only replace it with a OEM box and not the TRD box but I assume what you meant by warranty was drivetrain warranty.

Pretty bad ass Intake. Did you feel like you gained any HP or increase in performance? I know it's not going to be anything crazy, just did you notice a difference aside from the sound. After installing mine (full installation here: https://www.trail4runner.com/2017/05/29/trd-cold-air-intake-install-5th-gen/), it felt like there was more top-end power. Once the 4Runner was hitting 3k-4k RPMS, the power was known compared to before. Also, it could just be mind over matter. In any case, it does look pretty... : )

I'd like to see a 4runner on the dyno before I would be swayed either way. A car designed for speed witb a turbo is not a good comparison to a slug
