TRD Oil Filter vs Standard Oil Filter

I have a 2017 TRD Pro Cement. My last oil change I used the standard oil filter element:

I just learned there is a TRD oil filter:

Has anyone run the the TRD oil filter and if so was there a noticeable difference in the oil quality over the life of the filter?

I don't mind paying more for cleaner oil but I don't want to pay for marketing and hype either.

its a waste of money, no filter is going to filter past about 20 microns unless you install a bypass filter. And you cant run a bypass filter as your primary because its too restrictive and will starve the engine. The ultimate filtration is a normal filter and a bypass filter installed along side it.

The TRD filter is just hype to get more money from people, they love labeling things "TRD"

I'm a fan of Mobil 1 oil and filters. The Mobil 1 M1C-256A Extended Performance oil filter is the one that fits 5th gen 4Rs.

What micron level is the standard OEM oil filter rated to compared to the TRD? I see the TRD filter is a 3 ply synthetic. The OEM looks like a 2 ply. I have a 10 micron on my FI diesel and don't run a bypass filter so running 2 to trap smaller particles and stop water is not necessarily true.

I use the TRD filter because of the o-ring on it. I would guess that seals a bit better than the others.

Thats because its diesel and runs such higher pressure and more volume than a gas engine oil pump so they can get away with smaller micron filters.
My diesel had good filtration too plus a bypass filter

That is GREAT info! Very timely too, as I just got my 4R a few months ago and am planning on doing an oil change soon. Was originally planning on just taking it to the dealer, but I'd rather just do it myself.

I'm definitely going to order this part.

Incidentally, I find that little filter drain very clever. My 2.5T Volvo has a similar filter setup, but no drain in the filter housing. Makes a friggin MESS every time I remove it.

It's even better combined with the motivx drain tool. No mess at all. The push on drain that comes with the filter works too if you find some hose to put over it.

You might consider picking up the MotivX filter wrench that I mentioned in the article. It's very nice.

There is absolutley nothing wrong with the plastic filter housing. Toyota engineers know what they are doing.

The Toyota engineers know what they are doing, they just have no control over the tech’s fingers (or yours) when that plastic slips from them and cracks.... only to find out when that oil light comes on at 70 mph on a crowded interstate !

If you go through all this, might as well add a fumoto valve. Added on my first oil change 4 years ago and easiest oil change ever. It fits under the drain plug plate with no issues. No more torquing the plug or crush washers...
