TRD performance parts on a '95?

Bought my first car yesterday, a '95 Runner 4x4 6cyl. I don't officially get my license for a couple more months, so I figured with all my down time with my new baby until then, I would go ahead and get her all sexy for the roads. I was looking through the TRD catalog, and noticed the oldest year for the 4Runner that they have parts for is a '99. Are the 2nd Gens and 3rd Gens so different that those parts won't fit at all, or can I make it work?

Unfortunately, you're going to find that the 2nd Gen is barely acknowledged by most general aftermarket shops. You can get hardcore pieces through serious offroad shops, but the usual items like dress-up stuff typically start with 3rd Gens or later.
 
The later wheels are going to have more backspacing, which means you might run into fitment issues. I run 3rd gen wheels on my '85 for example, but I need wheel spacers to clear the brake calipers.

If you don't mind me saying, spend the time until you get your license baselining your maintenance - change all the fluids, tune up the engine, new belts and such. Get it running perfect first, then play with the appearance. :)
 
Yeah that's probably what I'm going to do because I, unlike some people on this forum, do not have money trees in my backyard. I have a lot to save up before any wheels or lift happen.

I wouldn't dare suggest that people here don't work hard for what they have.

I'll give it a pass because I'm sure I said many stupid things when I was your age.

thats because your 85 was a SA
the OP should have no problems with any 3rd gen and up rims on his 2nd gen runner. my friends 1st gen runner IFS is running FJ wheels with no problems

The same wheels shoved the tire into the upper control arm on my '86.

The backspace on the later wheels is generally more than the backspace on stock 1st and 2nd gen wheels, and the op MAY run into fitment issues if he tries to use them.

Sorry, definitely wasn't suggesting that. It came out wrong. I was just saying, after looking at some build threads on here, it seems like some guys are loaded. Not that they don't work hard to get that money. I'm just a little jealous of some of these rigs on here.

I actually found a TRD dealer's website that allowed me to choose my model and year and it showed those wheels in the available parts. Just to be positive though, I'm going to talk to my local shop before I do any buying.
 
Yeah, like KidV said, I would take my time and get to know the truck. Make sure everything is mechanically good to go before spending money to make it flashy. You're in CO, so go out and play on some of their gorgeous trails--it doesn't have to be crazy to be fun, and you may find you want to put your money into something other than your first considerations. Have fun!

As soon as the snow melts, that is exactly what I plan on doing. Hopefully that will be soon considering how terrible the snow is this year.

i guess i never account for people who run too wide of a tire for the riim so it bulges. i can see this being a problem with the upper arm. nothing wheel spacers wont fit

Why wait for the snow to melt? I love wheeling in the soft quiet snow! Let me know and I'll take you out and show you what Colorado wheeling is all about!

For what it's worth, these builds that have a lot of money put into them weren't built over night. They take time. With that being said, don't be in a hurry to build your 4runner all at once. I agree with what KidV said, take care of the drive train and make sure that your rig is healthy. Once you have a good reliable rig then you can go out and upgrade it as you see fit.

idk how your having problems than, my buddies 87 runner with FJ cruiser rims and tires is not having much problems other than getting stuck at this spot haha

That would be awesome if you didn't live in the Springs! But yeah with the way the snow has been this winter, I don't think it would even been that much of a problem. But first I need bigger tires....

Yeah of course they take time. I just wish money came quicker so that time was spent with more mods! But yeah, I'm definitely not going to be doing anything crazy for a while, so I will be getting to know her intimately until then.
