TRD PRO and 33" tires

I am wanting to put some 33' on my 2015 TRD PRO and am wondering if I have to do anything to my suspension or any other mods in order to get them to not rub or bottom out. I hate to have to have spent money on the TRD suspension only to have to replace it for bigger tires. Any thoughts and advise would be welcomed.

This is a totally legit question since the pro has a different suspension.

And 95% percent of the people on this site don't know anything about clearing tires, so ignore their BS.

Here is the deal. Lifts (without bump stop extensions), don't really allow you to run bigger tires in all conditions. It will allow you to run larger tires on the street if you are a mall crawler.

Once off road, you will be able to get the suspension to articulate to the bump stops. At that point, the lift is really doing nothing for clearance (at least in the front). In the rear, the equations changes up because the axle angle comes into play (since lifts usually extend down travel also).

Overall, clearing larger tires on a 4r is more about front end alignment and trimming then it is about lift... So, yes you can clear the tires but it will require some modifications (mainly trimming the plastics or pushing them out of the way).

Wheel size/offset and the specific tire also make a big difference. Aftermarket UCAs also help quite a bit when running a larger tire. These allow you to set the caster higher, pushing the wheels more froward so that you don't have to do a body mount chop...

Right! And this was exactly the danger warned about not too long ago. OP has a legit question due to his different suspension but because of the Pro attitude he won’t get a straight answer.

If the question replaced 'TRD PRO' with 'Bilstein 5100' no drama would have ensued.

Yep and it's sad that people have to be such asses. Frankly, I LOVE my Pro. It makes me smile every time I drive it. Someone else made a great point in that a LOT of non-pro owners are spending a lot of money to convert their Trail and SR5 models to look like a TRD...

I said this elsewhere but at the end of the day, they are a limited edition and are pretty cool. In 1969, they made 19,018 Z/28 Camaros. They made probably 100,000 other non-Z's... Countless numbers of those have been converted to look like a Z (Cloned) but at the end of the day, if they aren't original, they'll never be worth as much. I know the basis for comparison is slightly off balance but I would bet years down the road, a true TRD Pro will be worth more than the others. Doesn't mean one is better than the other, buy what you like and be happy. Don't bust other people's chops for their choices.

Uhh, that is comparing apples to oranges, or more like gemstones to TuRDs.

Don't get me wrong the TRDs are nice trucks just like all other 4Runners. They are all a good base to start from for an offroad adventure rig.
The TRDs are just an appearance package with different shocks and coils, wheels.... If they had put a 5.7 in them... then it would be worth 2x or 3x more and might have some true collect-ability. However, they are just nice trucks that will have higher short term re-sale. That's about it.

I do think all the hate on them is unwarranted, but it mainly comes from a few misinformed owners thinking they are much more than they really are.

Yeah, Apples/Oranges, that's why I said the comparison was a bit out of balance BUT, a limited edition is a limited edition.

MOST special edition vehicles these days are all fluff, it is what it is. I think Toyota should have at least added the TRD Cold Air Intake and maybe a cat-back exhaust to these. Having said that, I like mine anyway.

Actually, it is quit the opposite IMHO, Many of the limited edition vehicles offer amazing performance and it becomes and instant collectible.

Z28 Camaro
ZR1 Corvette
Hellcat SRT.....
Mustang Shelby GT350R

The list goes on. Toyota will never make a collectible car again. That is just the nature of the company.

Nothing wrong with a TRD, but its not that special either. Just a good looking truck that performs a little better than a trail out of the box. It will not have any long term value over any other 5th gen.

Why do people love making sure we know its a PRO?

Not sure I'm clear on the question since you have your year, make, model, engine size and a link to photos of your rig.....which is very nice by the way but don't understand why you would question someone else identifying their 4 runner.

I've owned 7 Toyotas and have a 2013 t4r and will have a 2016 within the next 2 weeks. (details withheld to avoid getting flamed)

Mmnn sure for the most part true... the new Supra I suspect may have some value :) The older models are still pretty desirable. Hands on any overseas LC and your good too.

Clarified :) and agreed.

Then there is a little sticker in the door jam with a paint code on it, I bet you start seeing a few late model near totals suddenly become a TRDP.

Ok guys, you have made your views clear on the TRD Pro trucks. Just give it a rest. They are still 4Runners last time i check so they are still part of our family. This is just a warning. i am tired of the reported posts of the name calling and such. From this point there will have to be infractions given.

Thanks for your thoughtful response. IMO this anti-TRDPro circle jerk is getting ridiculous. My first thought coming into this thread was that the "Tire/Wheel Spacing Guide" would get posted but it wouldn't really apply because the suspension is different. I thought it was a decent question. The attitudes of members lately is probably driving some people away. I don't want this to turn into a website like the Tacoma or FJ forum that's just full of douchebags.

To your comment: "Lifts... without bump stop extensions... At that point, the lift is really doing nothing for clearance (at least in the front). "

What would be the best way to increase clearance in the front? Coilover kits like the Toytec BOSS? Right now I am completely stock on my Trail and I don't know a ton about lifts. When I was off-road today I scraped the shit out of my front skid plate. Started making me wish I had a lift.

Good news / bad news. Oh hell, there is no good news. The bad news is that you completely missed my point.

You guys have reaped what you have sown. Enough of us have warned you that this would happened. Some of us even begged you to stop.

So, I don't care about an infraction or a ban. You idiots have ruined a once great forum with your idiotic stupidity.

These are just stupid little trucks guys. Nothing special at all really. Just reliable go pretty much anywhere transportation. They are not great at anything, just decent at everything. Owning or not owning one does not change who you are.

Sorry for the confusion. I was talking about how a lift relates to clearing bigger tires. It really does not add any tire clearance once at full compression....

Now, as far as clearing obstacles on the trail... yes, A lift will make a huge difference in that department.

Most people run a 3" lift and it is best to get that lift via suspension (coil overs in front, coils and shocks in rear). Icon, King, Fox are all really nice stuff. OME and Toytec also get the job dones just fine. You probably don't need remote resi shocks..Those are mainly for running at speed in the desert... where heat becomes an issue.

I really like my current setup. Icon 2.5 extended travel coil overs in front with Total Chaos uniball UCAs. ICON 2.0 long travel shocks in the rear with Metal Tech Long travel springs. It's pretty ideal on and off road.

If on a budget... Go with OME or ToyTec and some type of ball joint UCA (Camburg or light racing). Caution on the durability of the light racing units though. I keep seeing failures on those.

new Supra? I will believe it when I see it. Toyota can't build a sports car that is competitive now. The company is simply too conservative and boring. They don't have the culture for it.

There was a video posted on here the other day where the Toyota rep (maybe clueless) stated that the engineering team in Japan was pushing hard to take the 4r to a unibody... softroader. Supposedly, the north american marketing team talked them out of it for the time being..... You can see it in all their products, "soft" is the culture. It works for some stuff, but not for limited editions....... Supras were amazing cars, but extremely anemic from the factory. Those motors were more than de-tuned.... Being so overbuilt from the factory is what made them a tuners dream come true. Imagine a supra today... Toyota would have it locked down and it would have all this potential with no way to tap into it.

I'm just trying to point out. If you are looking for a car to buy new and keep as some type of collectors edition that you can sell down the road for large sums of money... Toyota is probably not the place to go shopping.

You are correct that Toyota can't build a competitive sports car. The supra is a joint project between bmw and Toyota. It's been in the works for a few years now with little info about it, so like you I'll believe it when it see it at the dealer.

The Supra will be priced to the point its not competitive with... anything.

The FR-S was a victim of shitty pricing (3-5k ADM), ignorant sales staff, Scion not knowing what to do with it, Subaru having better AND faster cars, and tough competition from American sports cars in its price range.

Toyota might as well give it up if it wants to compete against premium sports cars, especially if it's sitting in a showroom sandwiched between two M's.

You totally bring up some good points, conservative and boring. Lol they gave given themselves that reputation in recent years. They have the capital they could do it easily, since well they are saving a bunch of money not developing the t4r supercharger.

Just saying if they did the Supra would be a niche line similar to the Nissan GT-R or the Honda NSX. That's all. I think if they did produce it as the other manufacturers do it would be in small numbers. Adding to its allure, this is however all speculation of course :)

Just bringing up counter point to the discussion.

When I first joined this forum I was excited to see all of the trucks and then all the pissing an whining like little kids. It's to bad as I sure this used to be a great forum it now seems like the few bad apples are ruining yet another form.

Btw I am sure the title of my build thread really erk'd a few of you guys.
