Trd Pro Problem with Skid Plate

Fireside

I did my first oil change on my Pro. When I went to put the front bolts back to remount the skid plate I found one bolt kept spinning. Upon inspection saw that they have a nut up inside the frame that the bolt tightens to that was either glued or tacked somehow and came off. You can NOT get to the nut! I pushed it over to the hole with a piece of wire but now what? As soon as you touch it with the bolt it will just move away again. Am not happy......

Maybe try the stick nuts that shrockworks uses for slider mounting.

It was probably just tack welded into place and it just broke loose. If there is enough material you should be able to have it retacked.

Being it is a new truck, maybe take it to the dealership, explain to the service manager what happened, and get them to have it re-welded on Toyota's nickel.

just sayin, cause it's a new truck...

Yeah I'll have to figure out something. I just wanted
Everyone else to know about it. I would not have
Your garage use their Impact wrench on the front
Bolts when they change your oil!

I test heavy duty alternators at work, and I have screwed up quite a few alternator shafts using an impact gun. I have learned to put the nut on with a racheting wrench, and use the impact to take it off.

With the impact its like you lose your sense of touch with it, when you do it by hand you can tell something is not right before the damage is done, not after.

There are impacts with torque limits, they are used in the factory for speed.

Thanks for sharing

Sorry to hear that it happened but appreciate you having shared the experience. It's a pain but I agree with Saker that it being new, should be resolved on Toyota's dime.

If that bolt came loose like that I wonder if that's what's going on with the TRD Clunk. Front skid shifting or banging in place with the back nut broken loose? Even before the oil change...

That would be a good place to check to see if those skid plate bolts are still snug.
I can't recall the actual torque value when I installed my plate, but I'm thinking its somewhere close to 40'ish ft lbs....

Can someone verify that ?

That would make sense if it was the clunk culprit! I never would've thought that. Make sure to post it in the clunk thread. A few guys with their trucks being looked at for the issue can mention it to their dealerships.

30 N·m (306 kgf·cm, 22ft·lbf)

Thanks for the clarification rumbleph1sh... man, :noidea: I was way off!

I can't seem to find how to link this thread about the TRD skid plate in to the TRD Pro Clunk thread :noidea:

I'm sure it's easy to do I just need a nudge in the right direction :yo:

Good to know about the 22 ft-lbs for the front skid. Might give me enough courage to get under there and take it off to see what happens with the clunk.

Right click on the link in the address bar, click copy, go to the TRD Clunk thread, click post reply, make a post telling them to look at the following link...or something like that....
Click on the small globe with the chain link, when that opens, right click on the highlighted http in the box and click paste. It will insert the link from the skid plate thread in your post and be sure to preview before you hit submit.

This is probably a good idea, they won't do the repair in house because of the fact we don't weld at the dealership; but let them fix it under warranty.

As for an at home repair?

I used these to fix stripped out captive nuts in my frame when I installed my RCI Skidplates on my 4th Gen:

Thank you for that Saker! I should have thought outside the Forum interface on that! lol!

BlackWorksInc,

Can you give us the proper name of these little fixtures?

The bolt thread is M10 X 1.25 for the skid plate bolts!

This just happened to me too. How did it turn out? I'm taking mine to the dealer, but wanted to get something to hold it temporarily.

I'm glad I didn't take it in for maintenance. Don't know if they would have actually fixed this or not. Who knows what they would have done?? I didn't because I am 1 hour away from any dealership. I'm not driving 1 hour to wait 2-3 to get an oil change. I've done lots of things on my own and have all the special tools.
