trd pro skid plate install

Just got a TRD pro skid plate for my 17 TRD off road, no KDSS. I had my Toyota Dealers quick lube do the install. Everything went well in the install except the two rear bolts were too long? They ended up using the stock bolts which seem to be fine. Anyone have a similar issue or know why the bolts sent with the new skid plate were too long? We were all scratching our heads.

I am no Toyota expert (Jeep guy) but if I had to guess there are 3 possible reasons.

1. Gunk or corrosion in the end of the holes where the old bolts never got to. A tap would solve that.

2. Supplied bolts were spec'd too long or the packager threw the wrong ones in.

3. Is there another skid plate that is meant to be rearward of it but uses those same 2 mounts and overlaps, thus requiring longer bolts?

All I can think of right now.

The TRD Skid Plate (PT938-00140) was also made to fit FJ Cruisers so it could be possible that those longer bolts would be for the FJs.
 
Did you get the aluminum spacers for the rear bolts?

The aluminum spacers in the kit are for the front bolts. The rear should mount flush to the cross member. If you have KDSS you don't need to use the front spacers because you'll remove the radiator support brackets that they are used to clear. The install on a KDSS model will sit about 1/4 higher than on a normal model.

I cant remember if I used the rear bolts or the OEM ones, or maybe some aftermarket ones. I have aftermarket skids from there back. As long as they have good thread engagement I think the OEM ones should be just fine.
 
Sorry - I guess I was thinking for the rear, since I just did my RCI skid plate install, and the rear gets small spacers on those.
 
I just didn't want someone to happen on this thread and put them in the wrong spot. I'm actually kinda surprised that Toyota uses spacers like that. It's un-toyota like to not have a cleaner fitting solution - or at least have them welded onto the skid plate. For aftermarket it's often the easy and obvious answer. But if you have the facilities of Toyota - usually you can do better.
 
Has the Hardware

changed on a 2017 from a 2015? I purchased the skid from a 2015 TRDP owner and the hardware that was taken off of his seems to not be compatible. The bolts are just to large and will not go in the the same holes as the oem skid on the SR5. Can anyone confirm that they did change the hardware?

I just installed the TRD Skid on a 2015 SR5. I ordered it from a dealership online and it came with two front bolts with spacers already in the correct holes in the front position. It also came with two long bolts in a bag. I could tell they were too long, so I just used 2 of the 4 bolts I had to remove from the Member Braces. It worked like a charm! In total, very easy install.

1. Remove the Front Bumper Lower Cover and toss it (the plastic air dam thing).
2. Remove the old skid plate 4 bolts (12mm) The back end swings down and the front stays partially attached by 2 hooks that wiggle free.
3. Remove the 4 bolts (14mm) on the Member Braces. There are 6 bolts total. Keep the two most rearward ones attached.
4. Install new Skid Plate with attached front bolts and decide what bolts you prefer to use for the rear 2. Like I mentioned earlier, the 14mm Member Brace bolts seemed to fit perfect. Tighten each bolt to 22 ft lbf and your done.

Nice write up. Just did mine last weekend. Is there a reason you kept the two most rearward 14mm bolts of the braces attached ? Just want to make sure I didn't miss something

I am installing mine tomorrow, but from the looks of it the two frame supports with three bolts each (“members” in above post) stay in place. That is why the rear bolt is not removed. The spacer on the new plate goes in the big opening on the front of the frame member, allowing you to snug it down. The longer bolts go in the rear plate holes. They are longer because the threaded frame hole they thread into are long themselves and open on the top.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.
 
I installed mine yesterday and did not leave any of the stock skid bolts attached

Same here, I didn't leave any of the stock skid plate, or brace bolts in, but I did reuse 2 of the 6 14mm bolts from the brace to mount the rear of the TRD skid plate. I just stored the longer TRD bolts on the side

You're saying the braces don't need to be removed ? I'm going to revisit my install and put them back. Less parts for me to keep around the house the better, haha

Not sure. Looks like they would stay on the truck. Why would Toyota supply the front spacers which look like they fit the front frame support holes perfectly?

I will fool with it tomorrow and post my results unless someone corrects me before I put the trd plate on. I have an sr5. No KDSS.

I installed mine yesterday and this was what happened with my install. I removed the plastic splash shield which was held on with 3 10mm bolts. Then I took off the stock skid being held on by 4 12mm bolts. I then removed the 4 14mm bolts that were already attached to the black support beams. I tapped and cut the 14mm holes so I could use the 4 bolts that came with the trd skid. I installed the skid into the 4 14 mm holes with the new bolts. So after all said and done I have the stock skid, 4 12 mm bolts, the plastic splash shield and 3 10mm bolts from it off of the truck. You can trim the splash shield to fit but I just tossed it. Hope that makes sense

You can screw the stock skid bolts back in after you remove it I guess if you don’t want to lose the bolts and want to go back to stock in the future. Other than that I don’t think it really matters if you screw them back in or not as all they were doing was holding up the stock skid. Correct me if I’m wrong I’m no expert

Thanks! I can confirm. Revisited my install, and just as you said. Reinstalled the sub frame brackets using only the rear most 14mm bolts, and TRD skid plate goes over everything. I was still able to reuse two of the original shorter 14mm bolts to mount the rear of the skid plate instead of tapping the hole deeper. Also seemed to easily fit with the front plastic splash guard. Everything is nice and secure. Thanks again!
