But it is possible someone could have copied the key and/or obtained the key code.

Thieves have quickly adapted to changing times, so even the most modern security measures are only an inconvenience to serious/organized car thieves. Lo Jack is a good system, we install it at the dealership; but from what I have seen and read up on their design, they too can be defeated and possibly jammed given the right equipment (though this is more rare from what I read if not proven; more theoretical.)

Best of luck in recovering it, I find it odd that they ditched your gear on your neighbor's yard; that seems weird to me at least.

Hey, maybe you can answer this...

When we were at the Toyota dealership looking at cars a couple weeks ago, the dealer unlocked every car using a remote device that he just punched a few numbers into.

How does that work? Is there a module plugged into the car that is removed when it's sold? Or is that that mechanism built into the car? (It worked on ALL cars from expensive to bottom of the line, so it's not like the toyota onstar functionality only on some cars)

Can it start the car as well?

Seems like it could be possible that that device could be installed in seconds at the dealer when in for service then used to steal the car later that day... (If it needs installing at all, they need to put it on and take it off of dozens or hundreds of cars a week on the lot)

I've seen dealers use systems like this. The most recent one I saw also had a gps locator feature. We sat at the salesman's computer and he pulled up a map and confirmed the vehicle I wanted to see was in an overflow lot before we walked all over looking for it.

Not to scare you, but it certainly can happen in Lake View Terrace. My buddies car just got stolen out of Burbank, the nice part of Burbank too. So I'd say as long as you're in Los Angeles county, it can happen. BTW I used to live in Glendale too!
 
You will have 30 days of waiting..if the car is not recovered in 30 days your insurance will have to pay you for it. Can you give us an update!!
 
Sorry to hear about your theft.

If it's any consolation my truck was stolen right in front of my eyes, Christmas morning to boot. I turned it on to warm up the interior for the baby, go inside, come back out and they are driving away in it (fkrs) but mine push button, and the keys were with me, so they didn't take it far before they realized they didn't have the keys and they just left it somewhere.

Like you i didn't want it back because i dont know what they did with it, but it seems to be ok, hope everything works out for you.

in Hawaii many folks used to have those steer lock things but they were also a really strong stun gun :)
guess it was illegal ? but that is the 3rd world charm of the islands :)

Just a note. if you think it is serious enough that a dealership employee may have done it, you can have the dealership check to see if they had the key in stock to begin with. Also should be able to see if they sold a key that day from the system. if they do keep it in stock they should show where one was sold. if they have a discrepancy of a key missing then you can at least look at parts knowingly giving a key out.
 
TRD Pro was recovered

Sorry if I have posted any updates. I haven't been myself since my 4Runner was stolen. This morning, I received a call from my insurance company stating that the 4Runner was recovered. It was found approximately 5 miles from my house on Saturday, July 25. Looks like it was taken for a joyride. At this point, I no longer think the folks at the dealer had anything to do with it. Doesn't make sense to go through that much trouble just for a joyride.

The initial report provided to the insurance company stated that the vehicle was in driveable condition. I was also informed that the vehicle has a police hold. I was instructed to call the police to have them release the vehcile and then I can pick it up from the tow yard. I called the police and found out the report stated that it was in driveable condition and not stripped or burned, but had "traffic damage." I called back the insurance company and informed them of the traffic damage. I was instructed to let the insurance company pick it up instead. So they did. I'll find out more details tomorrow. I'll provide details as. Get them.

I'm crossing my fingers that if it will be repaired, he damage is only cosmetic and minimal. Again, thank you for the continued support.
 
I'm sorry if I'm being an A@#, but I have to bring it out in the open. This stolen TRD Pro seems like an inside job.

Finding the vehicle driveable 5 miles from your house and in one piece this many days into being stolen seems like BS.

I've met a few people that can make any car disappear and if insurance doesn't pay out what the owner wants it magically reappears all in one piece weeks later.

Sorry, bud. Its hard to believe that this vehicle was stolen without the key or tire marks from wherever you parked it.

I could be wrong, and ultimately who gives a S&*# about what I think, but I know the immobilizer system works very well.
 
I really don't like how this went down ! Hope for the best & expect the ? Need to see how they pulled this off ? Sucks donkey *^*^
 
Congratulations!!

I'm glad to hear you got your TRD Pro back. Sometimes that's how it works. The vehicle sits somewhere until someone notices it's not moving and calls the police. I'm curious to know how they stole it too. We may never know?

I have worked on lots of cars with immobilizers systems and there isn't really a way around it now a days. A lot of the times now you need a dealer login, Internet and manufacturer specific scan tools to program keys. Even if a key is ordered from the dealer it still needs to be programmed before it works. Sometimes when expensive vehicles are sold the dealer keeps an extra key incase the car needs to be repo'ed it makes it much easier with a key. I hope that wasn't the case but it makes it hard to think otherwise.

I had my 2 year old motorcycle stolen and I didn't have insurance and I was stuck with the rest of my $4k loan and nothing to show for it. I was told a lot of times in vehicle thefts people steal them and park them somewhere for a week or so and see if anyone comes and gets it. They do that as a low jack test. They don't want to get busted so they let it set somewhere kind of hidden and see if someone finds it through GPS.

Anyways glad you're getting your truck back.
 
I would get ready to file a diminished value claim. Seeing as the vehicle was stolen and then damaged (in an unknown # of places) it's going to be worth a lot less than what it was before. Even if you plan on keeping it for a long time, the value lost to you is real. I mean how many people would buy stolen/damaged Runner for anything near what the blue book is. If you decide to trade it, get the diminished value first, because the trade in value is going to reflect the recent events. Good luck with however you choose to proceed!

I just want to make sure I understand what you are saying here. Are you suggesting the OP staged the theft of his vehicle in order to make an insurance claim?
