TRD Pro vs TRD ORP/Former GX 460 owner.....

.......struggling with this decision.

Had a 2016 GX 460, on which I loved the V8 and KDSS, and since sold it and got a Ram 1500 Rebel that I've had for 18 months (hemi V8).

I'm spoiled in that I'm not sure I can get used to the 4.0 V6 on the 4runner (I didn't much like the 3.5 on the Taco TRD pro I drove last year), but I'm getting the chance to pick up a '20 TRD pro for around $2500 under MSRP.

I'm moving to the desert soon and will using the truck for lots of interstate driving b/w Vegas and L.A. and some light to moderate off roading in Nevada, Utah, and CA......I'll have time to go explore. It might go from light/moderate to moderate/serious off roading-- i'm not sure yet.

I'm not big on doing lots of after market mods, but I did put XD wheels and BFG KO2's on my GX and posted pics back in late 2015/early 2016. Looked pretty good and drove well, with the exception of some minor rubbing up front that I took care of. Surprisingly, my Ram 1500 Rebel with Toyo Open Country AT tires drives smoother than did my Lexus with that After market set up.

I'm not desperate to sell my truck by any means and had planned on keeping it for at least another year, but my neighbor may want to buy it at a good price, and the Toyota dealer is willing to do a courtesy trade so I can save on sales tax.
My 2017 Ram 1500 doesn't have any modern safety features (frontal collision warning, adaptive cruise) as a FYI, and is one major reason for me considering getting something with those features (adaptive cruise, frontal collision warning, emergency braking)

TRD Pro plusses/minuses:
+ Rig is set up great for non hardcore off roaders like me. I'll likely do almost nothing to it-- not even sure I will add a lift.
+ Fox shocks allow for amazingly smooth ride across poor roads and highway driving. Actually makes for a great cruiser from what I hear.
+ Presumed fantastic resale on a special color (AG) Pro
- No KDSS. I loved KDSS on my GX but am hoping I won't miss it too much on the Pro as I don't plan on turning
- Price of the TRD Pro. $2500 is great but I may be able to get a fair amount more off on a TRD ORP.
- Anemic V6. Not familiar whether adding a supercharger messes with the warranty, and/or how much people find this helps.

TRD ORP plusses/minuses:
+ KDSS is an option
+ Will save me $8-9K vs the Pro
+/- Can still get TRD Pro wheels and then get some KO2's or Falkens instead of the Nitto Grapplers.
- Resale may not be as good as the Pro
- While KDSS is great for cornering, the Pro may actually be the more comfortable cruiser.
-Anemic V6....see above.

As an aside, I have a Shelby GT350 as my 'fun car' so my 4runner doesn't need to handle like it's on rails ; )

Also, going back to Lexus is sort of 'meh' to me mostly b/c of the design of the suv. I thought the 470 >>>460 in terms of looks, and that Lexus took a huge step backwards in the design of that thing.

The dealer gets an AG TRD Pro coming very soon. If my neighbor doesn't want the truck after all, then I'll likely just keep my Ram 1500 for another 8-10 months at least, and re visit this next year after people give more feedback on their '20's over the next several months. I'm in no rush--unless my neighbor says he absolutely wants the truck--in which case I need to make a decision quickly.
If the consensus is that the ORP > Pro, then I can always tell the dealer I want to order a '20 TRD ORP with KDSS, sell the truck, and wait on the 4runner. If the consensus is get the pro, then that's a transaction that I would make in a week or so.

Also, there are no local dealerships that have both a Pro and and ORP with KDSS for me to drive back to back.

Would love to hear people's opinions on these options.

The sluggish 4.0 has many options. I have sprint booster, similar to pedal commander and it eliminates throttle delay. Many will chime in says they are bull but I promise you they have never driven with one. forum vendor here will back it with 100 % return if not happy and he's never had a return.
You can add intake and exhaust or supercharge it- link below

This is awesome-- thanks man.

Edit: Oh, damn. $6k for a supercharger for a 30% increase in HP/Torque? Hmmmm....

Think I'll just stick with the Sprint booster -- isn't that around a $300-400 option?

we exchanged some PMs. anyways if you are not in a rush then you might want to see what 2021 Pro brings. Blind Spot Monitoring is still missing in the 2020 4R lineup. My sister bought a new RAV4 limited Hybrid and it has all the goodies... including rear view enabled by a camera (the rear mirror turns into LCD Display with a single push of a button to show the rear view). I loved that feature because i often load my truck and can't see the rear at all.

2021 model details would be announced in Feb/March next year.

What about another GX460? Why did you get rid of the other one? A GX is pretty capable if you are not going wild with it.

Honestly? Aesthetics. And, to a lesser extent, the worse gas mileage.

And functionally, I hated the barn door on the GX.

If I got it, I would have to do a 2" lift, and change out the wheels and tires -- again. I think I would rather save a bit and go 4runner, as much as I loved Lexus service

If the power of the 4Runner is an issue, then it should be an easy pass. Power is something I care about, but for what the 4Runner is, it seems more than adequate.

I'd go for the ORP for the reasons you listed above.

I would save the markup, and put the money into the ORP non-KDSS for a higher quality suspension setup. With those savings, you could do the TRD + Nitto setup with a high quality coil over setup and have a far superior suspension setup for less.

-TRD wheels ~$700
-275/70R17 ~$900
-Lift
1. King $3500
2. OME $2800
3. Icon $2600

But, that's just my opinion.

Lot to unpack here, glad to help though!

Long story short, it’s easy to add shocks to any of these, but you can’t easily add kdss. I loved kdss on my last 4Runner, so if you know you want it I’d say get the ORP, then invest in your suspension of choice (ADS/Fox/King etc). Pair with Dobinsons kdss-specific rear coils and you’re set.

Try to find someone local with a sprint booster for you to test drive, made a huge difference for me. That’s the only way you’ll know.

If you go with larger tires you can regear to regain some lost power.

If coming from a Lexus and doing a lot of interstate driving, I may recommend having an audio shop sound deaden the doors, will return some of that Lexus feel inside the cabin.

Not sure if you’re planning on bumpers, but my fully loaded 4Runner gets the same mileage as my friends 200 Cruiser that’s lifted without bumpers.. food for thought.

OP, you WILL miss the v8... no reasonable mod(s) on the 4Runner can 'fix' that.. I've tried everything short of a supercharger (mainly due to reliability for my type of use) and now live with this as a given fact. The v6 with 5-spd is sluggish, but not really underpowered. On the plus side, the drivetrain combo is proven and bulletproof.

Off-road, a 4runner with a driver mod, mild lift, crawl control, and rear diff lock will get you through it all.. neither the RAM nor the GX can compete in the sand due to physics.. hands down win here for the 4runner.

As for KDSS, you will like the handling on-road, especially loaded up for a trip. But for sand type offroading it is useless.

Interior wise, the 4runner will rank behind the RAM and GX.. not by too much IMO

You ever drove with the sprint booster or pedal commander ? If not you don't know then. Add trd intake and exhaust and get more smiles per mile!

I did run the sprint booster for a while.. drives better, but had some issues with it so i took it off.

I still run with the URD MAF calibrator (tuned for my parts).. along with their y-pipe (pre-cat delete), a TRD intake, full gibson catback exhaust for a few years now

It helps.. but still no comparison to that sweet v8 torque by any means

After shopping for another 4Runner (this will be my 3rd 5th gen) and putting a deposit down on one this weekend I’ll give you my 0.02$.

The price difference between the TRD Pro and TRD ORP is significant considering what you really get for the money. The Pro gets a decent, but arguably overpriced, suspension and wheel setup, a few cosmetic changes, and a roof rack. All for approximately $10k more than the ORP. You can do a ton of aftermarket parts that are vastly superior to the factory PRO offerings.

Some will argue that the Pro has better resale value but I’ve seen the opposite as dealers typically get more for the Pro. I’ve seen ORP have more discounts off the front end so in the end the work out to a far better deal.

In the end I’m getting a ORP over the Pro because the price difference to me means I can pick the very best parts, customize it to what I want/need, and still have money left.

As for the power issue, it’s damn sure no V8 and never will be. Your saving grace is the GT350. every time you starting getting annoyed about the 4Runner’s lack of power, get in the 350 for a few minutes to scratch that itch. Unfortunately I sold my 1LE this summer so I don’t have that option currently but planning on picking up a GTR in the next year or two to scratch that itch.

Thanks, much appreciated. But when you break down that price of those options, I would actually come out ahead with the TRD Pro (with $2500 discount) over the TRD ORP with a $4-5K discount.
And I would like to keep as much of it stock as possible, mostly for resale.

Update.......

Drove a 2019 TRD Pro that was sitting on the lot last Thursday, to at least give me an idea of how I would like the '20.

I really liked it-- a lot. Of course, coming from the Ram 1500 with a Hemi V8 will take some getting used to, and as such, I'm leaning towards getting the sprint booster after reading a few threads.
I will say that the power delivery of the 4.0 in the 4runner vs the 3.5 in the Tacoma seems better.

The Fox shocks set up is fantastic on lousy roads and I honestly didn't miss having KDSS as much as I thought I would.

Now I'm just working on a deal with the '20 AG and a final price for the truck.
