TRD Pro won't go!

Has anyone had problems with their 2015 4Runner failing to rev up when you step on the gas? Have had the problem twice about a month apart. Check engine light comes on and the car just won't go. Turn it off and wait and eventually drives normal. First time checked out by Toyota they didn't find anything wrong. Happened today again and then also stalled a couple times. At least one of the codes pulled was for the throttle body. Two service departments denied any ongoing issues. Thanks

Sorry to hear about your troubles. I've had my TRD Pro for about a week and no issues so far. Knock on wood.

However this is very disconcerting to hear. The only reason I bought a 4Runner is for its durability and reliability. Otherwise I would have replaced my beloved LR4 with another one.

Please keep us posted about how things go and how the problem is addressed by Toyota i.e. what fixes are made etc.

Good luck.

I'd try taking to another dealer, Most of the time when the check engine light is turned on the code would should up in the history.

First off, your TRD-Pro is no different than any other 5th gen. They all have the exact same drivetrain. This is not a common problem, and it sounds like it is clearly a mfg defect.

It is probably time to start being a real A-Hole. Toyota dealers tend to deny things (especially when they are intermittent or could somehow be linked to a modification).

Codes don't show up for no reason... or fix themselves. Makes some calls to corporate and start being a very squeaky wheel. Your experience is obviously unacceptable.

If I had to take a wild guess on what the problem is based on the information you provided... I would guess the TP sensor or some connectivity issue in that system.

Why would the only example of any 4runner throttle issue be disconcerting? Are you also disconcerted that a huge asteroid hit the earth 65 million years ago? 4runners, toyotas in general, are extremely reliable and the engine in the 4runner has been used for 6 years and is in 100s of thousands of vehicles all over the world. Being disconcerted over one of them is a little bit of an overreaction.

you should rush to the Landrover dealer and tade your 4R in on one of those reliable vehicles quick!

There are no "ongoing issues". You're being jerked around by lazy and/or incompetent service people.

The CEL will throw a code. They can read the code in a matter of seconds. Grow a pair and insist on action before you're stuck out in Bumf*ck at the side of the road.

No, actually this is a common problem, only seen in the TRDP so far. Recall imminent.

My Land Rover has been more reliable than more 4runner has. I'm sure you don't have any first hand experience with them, or maybe you do? Most the comments you see like this are from people who read about horror stories on the internet, and actually have zero first hand experience. Or, maybe you're actually one of the few people that have had issues as a Rover owner. But, I'm leaning towards the "no you never owned a Rover" based on how you spelled it.

:focus:

You should get a Scan Gauge or Ultra Gauge that'll store the codes when they come up. Even is the light goes off the code will still be there.

I'm going to put my 2 cents here and I know someone is going to tell me I'm wrong. But anyway, I have worked in a Toyota dealer for over 20 years and I can shed some insight into why sometimes it takes multiple times to find a problem. A code in a system as most know doesn't tell you whats wrong but gives you an area to look at. If the truck is not showing the problem when you bring it in it can be difficult to diagnose. If the code is a common problem then they will fix it. If not and all their tests show up good then even the most experienced tech may not be able to find it.
Don't be a jerk to the dealer. They want to fix your truck just as much as you do. Toyota actually pays them to fix stuff too. Just think about it, if you have to keep coming back it doesn't look good for them either. Give them a chance and if you feel they are not working with you as you would expect ask to speak with the service manager and explain what is going on. If you feel you are still getting the run around then look for another dealer. Calling corporate is no help because the case just gets referred back to the closest dealer to you. Good luck.

Plenty of info aggregating the reliability data for us:

OP, If it keeps happening just get the dealers to document it. I haven't read of this occurring on these vehicles but let us know what you find.

At about 2k miles mine threw a code that was meaningless. I took it into the dealer and they told me the same thing but wanted to keep the vehicle to figure it out. I opted to just clear the code and now at 20k+ miles it never returned. I can clear the codes myself if I end up in a bad place because of it. I have a suspicion that it was related to an aftermarket alarm system that the dealer installed and tried to sell to me for $700 bucks which I declined. Unfortunately they spliced the wiring before I could get to her :(

Your joking right? Maybe you got lucky or you owned a Land Rover when they didn't suck. Data does not back up your claim. My neighbor has an LR3, I help him work on it A LOT.

MStudt well how does it feel to be leaning the wrong way? My 02 Disco.... spent more on repairs than mods.... couldn't wait to get rid of it...... but what do I know? I have no experience with LR

As has been said many times in this thread already, the OP's problem, while annoying and possibly disconcerting is a very rare occurrence with the 4Runner. I'm sure they will get it worked out. It is always frustrating to try and chase down these types of problems.

I have a friend who is a Land Rover mechanic. He has an insane amount of job security and will never personally own a Land Rover. That's enough for me, haha.

You can rest assured you chose an incredibly rock solid, reliable vehicle.

Not every vehicle can roll off of the assembly line trouble free. (regardless of brand)

I have the most problematic Land Rover that everybody *****es about, and it's a Discovery II. Your neighbor must have bad luck since the LR4 are some of the most reliable Discovery's made to date. The DI's are hands down the most reliable, followed by the LR4, then LR3, and finally the D2.

I honestly think the worst thing about Land Rover is the complete lack of forum related help. Every single LR forum there is, is complete junk! There are hardly any help related threads that have any kind of conclusive results or informative information.

Not joking either. I've spent more money fixing my 4runner than my Rover hands down. The down fall to the D2 is it's f'ing ugly, and thank god it's my wife's!

Please dont be so dismissive. Not sure what I said that is bothering you.

Why would the only example of any 4runner throttle issue be disconcerting?

It is disconcerting to me, because I just bought a TRD Pro last week, thinking that 4Runners are rock solid reliable. So I do not want/expect to read anything about problematic bahavior in a vehicle that I just bought. Since its not reassuring - it is disconcerting. OK?

Are you also disconcerted that a huge asteroid hit the earth 65 million years ago?

Not sure where you are going with this. If your point is that this is a 1 in 65 million occurrence. I'd say tap the brakes a little. Toyotas are reliable - but not THAT much. I have owned numerous Toyota and Lexus vehicles. They do have issues from time to time. Just relatively fewer than other brands.

Being disconcerted over one of them is a little bit of an overreaction.

No - thats not an over-reaction at all. If I go ahead and sell my TRD Pro that would be an over-reaction. Actually after making that post I went to Bridgeport OHV park and had a fun time off-roading with my family today in my TRD Pro. No thats not an over-reaction, I dont think.

Have a pleasant day.

Oh what a friendly bunch of folks here. Greetings !

Yeah - I wanted to do exactly that (before I bought TRD Pro). Unfortunately LR4s are in short supply. I would have to order one and wait 3 months. A 4Runner TRD Pro, which is most certainly a very capable vehicle, became available at a local dealership and I decided to buy it. If an LR4 was available with Heavy Duty Package at a local dealer I would have most certainly purchased it instead. In my opinion LR4 is one of the best, most capable, refined, versatile and comfortable vehicles on the road today. If 4Runner is half as good I'd be a very satisfied owner.

Poor response to throttle pressure and the fact that it stalled would make me think of a TPS/IAC issue as well.
