TRD Push Button Start....can it be added?

Anything is possible. I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard.
I like your enthusiasm, but it says in the instructions "for vehicles equips with push button start only" and "2wd only".
How would you get around the chipped key?
Does anyone know what the back of the keyed ignition switc looks like.
I have a pic of TE back of this one...

you could wire the keyed ignition to that button, then leave the key in the RUN position. maybe then relocated the key switch to under the dash somewhere? then cover the hole.

If I understand the Japanese instructions (and I don't) the switch is a 3 position switch push in all the way = Start, let go switch remains in Run, push in again to toggle off.
So in theory, it has start, run and off...so the question is, will it plug in to the harness, and can you HUD a key in the dash close enough to trigger the transponder???
It shows to fit about 40 variations of Toyota vehicles....so I would have to guess the ignitions in most of them (newer one) are very similar.

More than likely I think it probably means that it fits 40 variations of Toyota vehicles which already have a smart key...ie. replacing the factory push to start button with the fancy TRD one.
The only way I see this as being a feasible add-on into your current 4runner is if you use it as just a start button in addition to the regular key. I really doubt there's 3 actual electrical positions in the button itself, it sure feels like it's only just a momentary on-off switch...
You may be right, but it does have 4 pins. Leads me to believe there is mote than on-off. I'm sure one is illumination. But consider this, if it was just an on off. How would it start the vehicle and the disengage the starter once running. And the when you push it again, how would it shut off and not re-engage the starter..
Just thinking out loud. I have push button start In my 83 Hilux (has a Lexus V8). Perhaps I will look at it a little closer.

All those functions you mentioned are controlled via a computer I believe, I think it just detects the push button actuation and does it's thang...it's been a while since I sold my old car that had the smart key, but I am almost positive that when you are engaging the "start" function, you can let go of the button mid way and it will continue cranking until started. Same with turning it on and off...for example if I press the button once while I am in park it will turn it completely off; if I press the button once (the same exact way) but leave the shifter in gear it will turn the ignition off but keep the accessories on.
The four pins are probably mostly for the illumination purposes (the led has an orange and a green to indicate the button status).

I know there are some guys that have added them to 3rd gen with the chipped key, Zacattack is one, and there was a guy from Tacomaworld selling kits...not sure about 5th gen though. Gimme a few and I'll find the threads.

Mine I added was an RFID ebay kit from china for $80. The button is just that, a button. You need some sort of controller/computer to tell it what to do. You could probably get the button and then like a cheap kit that I got and use them together. As for wiring, I have a '98 so I didn't have all the computers controlling the truck like newer trucks do. I don't have an immbobilzer but many people that do, like when installing a remote start, just tape a key around their ignition switch to bypass that.

I guess you could just wire it to the starter wires of the ignition switch but then I don't think you are going to get an option to have just the power on with the engine off. You also need a way to disable to the wheel lock. So you either are still going to need your key everytime and get in ,turn to RUN and then push the button which is more work; or you cut off a key and leave it in the ignition turned to ACC and then cover the hole. That last option though isn't too safe against someone being able to break in and just push the button to start it.

I think this would be a major hurdle and why this is meant as a straight replacement for a current push start with the smart key system. You would have to retrofit the truck with a full smart key capability (or similar hack) to use this button.

I know this is a super old thread, but I'll be wiring in my TRD Push Start Button in my 2017 4Runner SR5 real soon. I'll have it work the same way I had it in my Tacoma by still using the key for its transponder and to turn on ACC, and IGN. The button will light up amber on ACC, then green on IGN, and then push to crank and start. The TRD logo will also illuminate when parking lights are on. I'll still be able to use the key to turn on and start the car normally incase the button and/or relays fail.

Haha, sorry. I did this about a month ago now, didn't think anyone was interested. Besides the button, I also bought the factory connector for the button, 5 of the wires for the connector, and the trim piece off a Limited 4Runner for the button. Need minimum of 2 single pole double throw relays to make this work. Didn't cut any factory wires, just tap into them. I decided to solder my connections.

Button with the Limited 4Runner button trim. $37 part.
Just showing how I did the wiring. This was all taped and tied up like factory.
Key turned to ACC with button LED indicator lit up amber.
Key turned to IGN and ready to start with button LED indicator lit up green. The LED stays lit green while truck is running.
Parking lights ON with truck started. TRD Logo lights up, and button LED indicator lit up green.

Yes. The way I did it, it doesn't replace the key, or modify it in any way. It's just a added toy, cool factor, and something I just kept from my old truck and wanted to add to my new truck. I'm just sharing it because of this thread.
It functions like the push start button that came in the Honda S2000, or SRT Rams where the key is used to turn ACC and IGN on, and then the button is used to crank the car. Only difference is I can still start the truck normally with the key incase something with the button ever fails.
It could possibly be a direct plug and play swap for the guys with Limited trim and smart key though.
