TRD - what exactly does that mean?

So... I'm a new Toyota owner... and I see TRD all over the place... Some rigs come stock with TRD stickers, some add them...There are also TRD parts that serious T4R owners add to their rigs...

What does it mean?

Do you need TRD parts to have your rig labeled TRD? Does it mean that you have TRD parts?

Why should I care about TRD?

No 4runner came with the TRD sticker on the side, only tacomas did. We add them just becuase.

Supercharger (2 generations)
7th injector
headers
exhaust system
Wheels (aka ivan stewart)
e-locker
Interior trim (shifter knobs, etc..)
radiator cap
oil cap
thermostat (160*)

We add them because the add 10+ hp. LoL.

One thing I learned last year is that TRD parts are just premium parts from OEM manufacturors like Koyo, Denso, NKG, ect. Toyota does not make parts, even TRD labeled parts.

I could use an additional 10HP...haha

Now I get the joke, I read elsewhere on T4R.org that people keep adding stickers that add 10HP, and I'm like 'What the?! How can you get 10HP from a sticker?' lol

The way it was explained to me by a shop owner that buys hundreds of thousands $$ in parts a year ... Toyota does not make parts. Their parts come from manufactures like Koyo.

Each few years, a different company (or same) wins the bid to manufacture specific parts. Example: Koyo is a brand that at some point made the radiator for 3rd Gen 4Runners for Toyota Corporation, but they might not supply the part now in 2012. You can still buy a Koyo radiator and it is just as good as the Dealership part because they were an originally manufacturor.


In conclusion, Toyota does not make parts.


You only** want to buy a part from the dealer or a manufacturor that once produced directly for Toyota Corporation.

I will admit I have the stickers. I dont think it is the same thing as adding a false M badge to a BMW. Toyota has always been loose with their TRD logo. I dont think 4Runners EVER came with a TRD package.

Well the TRD Tacoma's don't have any TRD parts. They just have Bilstein shocks, lockers and/or sport hoods. Nothing really TRD about them unless you consider the coils to be TRD. I'm still undecided on putting the stickers on my 4runner. I may eventually, but right now I'm good without them.

99% TRD poser here, i have legitimate TRD floormats so take away a point but yeah, look at my freaking name, I thought it was brilliant idea at the time but i'm pretty sure someone put roofies in my drink when i was thinking of it :jump:
I don't really care anymore i have a reputation with this funky ass name now so whatever! I'll eventually get a lovely SC and some nice TRD wheels to make it officially a "TRD"

A lot of you brought up good points, but even the TRD Tacomas these days dont come with a supercharger. It's a package deal like the "Sport" package on the 4runner. Just look at it as better suspension, hood scoop, something, something else and black floor mats that say TRD. IMO it's nothing like putting GT emblem on your V6 mustang, or putting VTEC on your non VTEC honda. It's just representing or creating a Toyota package option and making your 4runner unique.

I am adding TRD stickers (not that I like them a bunch) because I backed into a dumpster and I did a little damage to my rear quarter panel. I am trying to hide me being a dumbass.
