Tread Lightly speech

Hey all,
I have to do a speech at school on anything I want. I think I'm going to do mine on Tread Lightly. Seems appropriate since my school is half comprised of kids who have no respect for private property. I did some browsing at treadlightly.org but am just looking for pointers on some subjects to hit on. Thanks.

My Dad always said "leave the trail the way you found it". Nature is meant to be appreciated, not destroyed. He was a curator of the forest and while I didn't understand or appreciate it as a kid, I certainly do now and our property is more beautiful as a result. (he planted 2-3,000 seedlings every spring, and spent the rest of his spare time each year going from tree to tree stapling pieces of paper around the buds to keep the deer from eating them). But anyway...

Here's a few random ramblings that might help spur your thought process.

When you go out on the trail, whether it's public or private property, you're intruding on an animals home.

Destroying foliage is destroying a potential food source.

Tearing up trails, cutting down trees, breaking down brush, leaving trash behind are examples of things that will create a negative impression for the next person to follow in your "footsteps". You never know who that person may be. The more people who witness this destruction, the stronger the movement will be to keep four wheelers, dirtbikes, snowmobiles, and 4WD vehicles off the trails.

a big thing out here at historic sites is that everyone and their brother seems to feel it is fine to take home a souvenir.

So every mining shack has been stripped of every square nailhead and anything loose was taken years ago.

From time to time I will come across some ya-hoo actually prying the weathered boards to take part of a wall.

Meanwhile I see fresh Bud Lite cans-and AMP and Monster energy drinks strewn about...grrrrr:vader:

I make it a point to take everything home I came with and more. By more-I mean we pick up the bullet casings and the cans and a portion of the crap left behind by the numb nuts.

If each person heading out would just take care of their own we would have no trash issues-but people don't- so you have to pick up just a wee bit of their slack.

I recycle almost any metal I come across- so I look at it as money in my pocket that some fool just gave me.
