I bought the wardens size 265-75-16's in march of this year and I am now seeing cracks where tread meets sidewalls. I currently have 16,000 miles on them. Based on how these tires have been talked up and the research I did, I'm definitely dissapointed. I have sent the warranty form along with pictures. One week and no reply! Called the warranty and get voicemail. Again dissapointed after reading about there great customer service.

I purchased the AT tire about two months ago and ran into issues where two couldn't be balanced. I reached out and they ended up sending me two new tires.

I do know the woman who was helping me, I think she does all of the inquiries, has had some major family medical issues. I'm not going to get into details as it's not my place, but she was replying to emails late nights and was trying to get me tires quickly.

I can understand your frustration, give it a little more time as she may be catching up on things.

I received a warden that had a pretty noticable gouge in the sidewall.

I contacted them and they contacted me the next morning. I was told its acceptable to their standards. I'm not satisfied with the experience.
 
Ripcord, I agree. I finally talked to someone at treadwright who also told me these tires were ok and this was normal. Even went as far as to say they looked great to have 16000 miles! Needless to say she would not replace the tires. Looking at the pictures, would you guys say I have a legit complaint or am I out if line?
 
To me it looks like dryrot, may not be but it looks like it. I don't think I've evet owned a tire that didn't at some point show a little dryrot, good tires, cheap tires, etc... Even if you have separation issues developing I doubt it would be as uniform as it appears. I'd run them and of course monitor them. I had a set on an old ford that started to separate, they developed bulges that looked and felt terrible, they never blew but gave me plenty of warning.
 
Re-Treads

This is my understanding of how treadwright re treads tires:

A suitable candidate is selected, the remaing tread is buffed off, and a new tread casing is vulcanized onto the remaining carcass. In order for the tire to be shaped, well like a tire, the tread has to get thinner as it wraps around the sidewall.

If i understand the sciences behind the process and rubber, what you are seeing doesn't look too bad to me...at all. It appears largely superficial.

Of course i would monitor it closely for more serious cracks to develop.

Having seen a few sets of these tires first hand, i think they are a good buy for the money. However, MANY people, myself included, seem to over scrutinize them.

Have you aired the tire down for off road use?

I have heard and experienced through a close friend nothing but good things about treadwrights customer service. i will be interested to see where this goes.

Tires look fine for retreads. But kind of looks like drying out caused by tire cleaner or shiner.



BTW How much was really saved with retreads plus shipping verses by new tires?
 
they look fine... and you haven't had issues in 16k miles. you're good. I think its just that subconscious fear of the tread falling off because its a re-tread. Don't worry about it.

I can't locate my receipt, I believe it's at home in my binder, but for 5 delivered to Philly, it was about $700.

I looked at several other brands/types and for 5, I was closer to $1000-$1100. I took the gamble as money is tight and so far, it's working. I did have two that were not able to be balanced, they sent me two at no cost. However, I do have to have them balanced. I am lucky in that I can mount them myself, just have to pay for balancing.

That really doesn't sound like a great deal to me. I bought 4 Cooper AT3s, load range C, for $640 plus tax, mounted and balanced ($700 with MO tax). At that rate you could have got 5 new AT3 for $800. Mine have 13K and look new (the tread is like 7/16" deep on these things).
 
That is a great price. I must have been looking in the wrong places. I tried several online sites as well as Discount tire locations as well.

I'll have to spend more time looking next time.

Thanks for all the input! I will keep a close eye on the tires. I believe I paid 675 for 5 delivered to metro Atlanta. Significant savings compared to buying "new". Tires have given me no problems to this point. Tires have never been aired down and have been rotated every 5000 miles. Still have a lot of tread. Trust me I know new is better than retread, so I'm not even arguing that. Hopefully this will help others making a decision on what to expect with these tires.
 
The cracking on the sidewall appears to be the casing showing its age...and like others have said, merely superficial. It's not fun to look at (that's for sure), but over time tires will create these little cracks, mainly due to ozone & exposure outside. And as Singtoe said, tire dressing will speed up this process too.

Storing used tires inside a garage instead of outside in the sun helps to reduce and slow the process, from my experiences. So that's why I say the casing is showing its age...it's on its 2nd lifespan of being on a vehicle. That's lots of days in the sun/elements.
 
I've got the same size Treadwright Guard Dogs with almost 30K miles on them. Similar type of wear as what you've been seeing and will buy more from Treadwright when these wear out.

They aren't painted. That's where the tire was scrubbed in for adhesive purposes. Looks like orange peal though.

I'm still 50/50 with mine. They are wearing great, perform well, look awesome, etc. However I had one that made a slight "ticking" noise since new. It sounded almost like a rock stuck in the tire when driving alongside walls. It got louder and louder, then I rotated my wheels and it was a full on slapping noise.

I contacted TW with thorough details only. They agreed to replace the tire, free of charge. Being that I have drove with this tire for awhile without issue I might make it my full size spare and install the new one, however these costs are adding up. I've balanced them twice, and now installing a new tire again. After those costs are added up I could have went with Duratracs to begin with..

I don't like the look of Duratracs, but it says something that they are a new tire and I'm still running retreads....

Something to think about next time for sure. Mixed feelings for now coupled with my hatred for tire shops.

Little story. I do EVERYTHING myself that I possibly can. Tire installs and balancing are not within reach. I got the tires installed and balanced and mentioned (3) times to statically balance them.

The shop didn't. While picking up the tire the tech loaded the tire with weight and got that blank look on his face when I mentioned STATIC balance. Right away, fired responses with me saying "not as good, wont work, mudders don't balance" blah blah. Doesn't matter. I gave a direction, they should follow. 80$ down the drain.

3000KM later. Balance issues. Took them back and said BALANCE STATICALLY. Second time making appointment, waiting 2 hours before they even look at the vehicle. Get them back... "Oh yea, they were way out of balance, took off a lot of weight". Fackers..

Get the bill. $130.00 for "special balancing". WTF?

Instead of bringing this up I left the shop. I'm not one to make a big deal but I will NEVER return to that shop again, and tell everybody to avoid it.

Last 10 years I've used shops a hand full of times. About 75% of the times I feel they did a half ass job, and overcharged. Then they complain when customers buy parts from the states and do their own work. Wonder why?

i had the guard dogs with hedge grip. bad idea i saved maybe $200. the hedge grip was chunking the tire, heavy,
NO sidewall. the carcass was over 10 years old and showed it bad. tryed talking to them, they said it was normal and that the last digits on the DOT was not the date made. BS.. not worth the savings over cheap new tires.
 
just curious, has anyone had any if their tires in the snow yet?

this thread got me interested in these tires and I have to say I am impressed (lol what?) do they still leave the bfg stuff on the casing or do they bring it all down and mold over the whole thing?

I don't like the idea of the kedge grip... sounds like it just asking to make noise. walnut shells and crushed glass?
