umm...i know of google maps, but i don't know much about it. please correct me if i'm wrong, but it only shows your location? how lame is that?
i also have a treo and i've installed tomtom 6 on it and just like the tomtom devices, it shows my location, where to go, how to get there, turn by voice directions, millions of pio, ect.
well, google maps is free, i guess. but i guess your usage is different than mine, even with the gas prices as they are, i like to take my family on trips, and the tomtom comes in handy, so i pay to play.

Google maps on your smart phone together wih a BT GPS receiver requires a data connection in order to download maps on the fly. Google maps can route you but there are no voice commands and does not have a direction arrow, only a dot. The maps also can display an amazing level of satellite imagery detail. Google maps is free software.
On the other hand resident navigation programs such as TomTom and Route 66 offer voice commands and rerouting calculation as you drive.
So there are pluses and minuses to each approach. I use Route 66 on a T-mobile Dash. I have Google maps installed but with no data service it works only with a Wifi connection [and you don't get very far with that

It does give point to point directions. It also shows a symbol where the turns are and if you click on those symbols it gives written directions. You can go back and forth between aerial photos and street map. The aerial images would be a lot more usefull off-road than a road map, although you do need cell phone coverage. It also shows points of interest. For example, type in Pizza or Quiznos and it shows where the nearest ones are and give addresses and phone numbers etc... The point to point directions can be input from your Contacts list, typed address or GPS coordinates, or current GPS location. It does a lot more than you think. I also use an Etrex Legend and Microsoft Maps and Streets on a laptop. Google Maps on the Treo is a nice compromize somewhere in between.
