Okay Guys so we got a real Conundrum...
I have a 1991 Runner 4x4 with a 3.Slow and a 5-Speed Manual transmission.
Was out driving and the pedal adjuster linkage fell off (came unscrewed from the linkage).
the pedal went to the floor and it would NOT shift gears. Got a new Master and a Slave, and Bled the crap out of it! My "mechanic" even went as far as putting it on some vacuum machine that pulls the air out of it and it still would NOT shift.
He recommended (or diagnosed it) as being the clutch plate. So New, clutch kit was installed. STILL WILL NOT SHIFT!!!
If the truck is off it shifts through all gears just fine, but turning the engine on will make the shifter NOT go in any of the forward gears and only grind in reverse.
If I start it with the transmission engaged in 1st gear, it will leap (lunge) forward and if I keep it going it will shift up while driving at the shift points.
I'm guessing maybe he knocked loose the vacuum line and put it back in the wrong spot or maybe something else has gone wrong.
He's trying to talk me into a $1,600 rebuild BUT although I love My Runner, I'm NOT wanting to dump that much into a 1991.
Any ideas what the solution might actually be? After him telling me straight up he doesn't know what's wrong with it and misdiagnosing it as a clutch I've lost faith in him.
I really think him telling me a rebuild is the answer is a scape goat to something else, particularly since he said, "it might be the synchros (sp?) OR maybe a bent fork, or something else" um... dang it man, you're the transmission guy, you're supposed to know!! :rockthrow:
PLEASE Help!! I don't want to get rid of her but I'm NOT at the point of dropping $1,600 into her either.
Thanks Y'all,
Cynthia
