Trip Computer/Clock Backlight Bad

Back in 2006 my trip computer's light started going out on the left side of the display. They replaced the whole unit, which was like $900 (covered under extended warranty). Now the same left side light is trying to go out, and, of course, the truck and the repair is long out of warranty.

Has anybody else had this issue? Is there a simpler fix besides replacing the whole doggone thing!!??

Can you still see the display during the day? If its just the lighting behind the clock and/or mpg, range display these bulbs can be easily replaced. I had to replace a bulb that was out on the clock side and had it replaced in 10mins. However, the bulbs are quite pricey though, around $5 a pop. Bulbs can be removed by removing your tray in the front of your cup holders. Open slightly and pull tray upwards and it will pop right out. This will then give you access to the phillips head screw that needs to be removed to remove the display. Once removed, pull on the drivers side bottom lip and display will pop off. Remove connector for display. flip over and this will reveal the bulbs. They can be removed by turning counter-clockwise with a small flat head screw driver. turn unit upside down and bulb should fall right out. :boink:
Went to Toyota when I had this problem and they told me the entire unit needed to be replaced. LOL :moon:

Are you ****ing crazy? You replaced the whole unit for a burnt light bulb? Tell me you at least kept the old one!

I just replaced mine with NEO4-x bulbs from SuperBrightLEDS.com. Make sure you get the High Power SMD bulbs, because the regular bulbs are not bright enough. Color is Amber.

Was replaced under warranty, he had nothing to do with it. But what a STUPID Toyota service department!
 
Wow! I guess I had the "send notifications of replies" turned off on this thread, and didn't think anybody responded. That's great - and pix to boot!!

I've been e-mailing my local service department and they were telling me I most likely had to replace the whole unit again. I thought this was really nuts the first time they replaced the unit under warranty - at a retail cost of nearly a grand!

Once again the power of the Internet has saved me time, money & heartache!

BTW: The bulb flickers a little, so it may even just be loose.

Yes, those are the correct bulbs.

Your dealer service department is full of a bunch of idiots. How many technicians does it take to fix a light bulb? What can $900 buy you in dealer technicians?

Could you put up pictures of how the new bulbs look?
And which ones did you replace?
 
edgilmer, ive gotta tell ya, i have tried many kinds of led neo s in there , including the smd, & nothing was as bright as stock , leds fire forward & in that area they will create a hot spot & the surrounding area will look dimmer. ive even tried different brands of incandesent bulbs, & still none has been as bright as the factory stock bulbs, unless maybe you mod up ur own larger ones with resisters. follow thislink http://www.toyota-4runner.org/problems-warranty-issues/6782-backlight-info-panel-flickering-2.html

Great find guys. my right half side just went out and i was stressing it would cost me an arm and a leg. or $900.

The 4runner 120 post with pics is perfect. I will be doing it asap.
 
Does anyone have the part numbers for the light bulbs? my right side of the clock is out. Can i buy them at any autoparts? Should i replace all of them since i have it open?
 
Looking for part #s for these bulbs also. Left side of display is dark(sometimes). I've replaced them before but but can't remember the part#.
 
pull the bulb as per previous posted instructions, bring it with u ,(dealer, advance, etc.) & just ask for neo 4 bulbs. u will be charged big time postage if u send away for them. in case ur interested, ive found that any leds offered are not as bright as factory ones. (hot spots)
 
Thanks, not really interested in LEDs, although the LED rear tails are awesome.
Searching around, I found a TSB where Toyota made some changes to the light bulb for the LCD display.
The TSB is dated 4/23/10 and the part# is 90010-09017. Hopefully this will help someone out.
I need to order some other stuff from Partznet, so I will order a couple bulbs too.
 
Cheapest replacement bulbs I've found.

I had to replace the clock backlight, and one of my HVAC knob lights on my 06 4Runner. I searched around for the NEO LED bulbs and happened to be driving by Radio Shack as a thought entered my mind. I was able to find replacement 12V bulbs for $1.98 for a package of 2. They installed in less than 5 minutes and are super bright. So much so I replaced every light in the climate control panel. For the green and amber lights you need to remove the "condom" and transfer it to the new bulb, otherwise the light is very bright. You will also have to trim the lead wires about 1/2".
The part # for the longer "green" bulbs and the "amber" bulb are 272-1092. They're in the area of the store that has capacitors, fuses, bulbs, etc. Probably in a drawer labeled "flashlight bulbs". Look for the #272 on the front of the drawer, then find part #1092.
I used these same bulbs for the clock display as well. They were a little small, but worked. I'm going back to see if I can find a more suitably sized bulb for those lights.
