Trouble with work

So today my boss calls me in and has a little talk with me about my internet usage, apparently the a-holes over at corporate have nothing better to do then sit and look at the websites people go to. While i was using the computer it started slowing waaay down because of some VNC remote viewer, so i closed it, which pissed them off even more. I got this email from the head internet dork:

I assume it was you on www.toyota-4runner.org, www.yotatech.com, and watching this rather long video.

The Internet is a Business tool. Please limit your usage to SBG

So apparently i am not supposed to go to any of those websites anymore. Which is basically all i do to kill a few minutes between shows and updates in the morning. I didnt email him back because i dont want it to become a big deal, but how freaking annoying. I just had to vent, anyone else have similar problems at work?

Yeah thats how i feel about the situation. I used to work for Cingular Wireless and they monitored everything down to the calls you were taking at the moment. It really sucked b/c you couldnt even send email back and forth between each other w/o them bitchen about it. EVEN THOUGH YOU WERE GETTING YOUR WORK DONE! thats what pisses me off the most. Sorry to hear that you got "caught" know tha feeling thats why i dont work there

When I took my most recent job the HR person said: no porn, no gambling and as long as you don't spend like 12 hours a week surfing you will be alright. I am still a little nervous about the amount of time I spend surfing now.

I was an IT manager for a Fortune 25 corporation.

Here goes:

1. You open the company up to litigation. Period.
2. You entice spammers by visiting websites. They have to pay people like us to clean it out, an expense.

Yes, they watch and record. They tend to bring the hammer down harder on people who are not hitting their numbers, hit your numbers and the eye looks the other way. Kind of like Lord of the Rings evil eye.

The worst part is you become buddies with most of the office people and they know you are a troll who must report to a higher troll.

Like it or not, Sac State is right on the nose. It's company resources and they own it. Take it seriously because they can get nasty and the law is on their side. My Company uses WebSense and actively blocks and monitors ALL web traffic. We also KEEP a copy of ALL email for 7 years. It doesn't belong to the employee but to the company.

Sucks, I know, but it's all headed this way.

Does your company have an Internet policy that defines what's allowed?

My management freaked when I gave them hard numbers showing 78% of all our email was personal. Yes, they can see that too. If they're VNCing into your box they know everything you're doing.

They have some guidelines, like no personal email, no ebay etc. but they block these sites they dont want us visiting so we cant even get to them. I wonder if they are going to block t4r and yotatech now. That would be hilarious.

I dont do anything personal like email (other than work stuff) or bank stuff or online ordering. But browsing t4r.org? Seems a bit much. I can understand not wanting to hog bandwidth with videos, i dont have a problem with that. I am not going to raise a stink about it, its not a big deal nor is it worth it, just annoying.

Yup I'm an IT guy working for the federal grov't and we are constantly being watched. I remember working in Tier 2 and having to pull people's hard drives, ghosting it and swapping in ghosted drive. Some nights I had to do a 2-3 of them.

Bad things is that most of those people were govies and all they got was a slap on the wrist. Some contractors got fired for less...

Just the way it is. When you're at work, using their computes and their bandwith is the control of the company. Hell you don't even own the desk or chair you sit in at work...

SMS is a lot easier and sneakier. If you box is a member of the domain, you can't hide.

Toybox, If you always assume you're being watched you'll be OK. We signed a statement saying we understood all the above and the company owns it all.

If you can't put it on the bulletin board, DON'T send it in email. It may be OK with your company but it may not be on the end that you sent it to.

I don't worry about 'what' I do because I don't use work email for anything personal and stay away from forbidden stuff, but I do worry sometimes about the amount of time I spend online.

I work with kids at afterschool, they have homework time and they have a computer with internet. One day, i was just surfing through this forum and vwvortex.com. The next week i try to use it, they blocked it or something, i can go to ANY OTHER site except those two. Since i'm connected to the school district, i guess they blocked it from the 'headquarters' of that school. One of the kids had to taddle on me which is lame. I feel your pain!

VPN is just as if you're sitting on the office network. They can be even MORE big brother with VPN if they want.

My company blocks a ton of ports coming through VPN. They started blocking port 80 and 443 (web and ssl web) and I mentioned that it would be nice if I could access Microsoft KB articles when I get paged at 2am with a down server. Duhhh

No I'm talkin about using your own line and computer since you are at home. I agree if you are hooked to their network you are monitored.

The only way I can get my work done is via the VPN into the corporate network. I always assumed that you could be watched on a VPN just as if you were in the office. That's why it pays to be careful on what you do while logged in using their resources.

If I just want to surf, I use my machine across our broadband connection without the VPN.
