Troubleshooting starting issue

For a while now my '02 has had this weird starting issue and I can't figure out the damn issue. When she's cold she fires up every time perfectly. When she's hot she fires up perfectly. The issue only arises once the car sits for a few hours after driving. I will go to start it and it will turn over about 5-6 times before starting. It always starts it just takes about 4-5 seconds to finally fire up. I'm not sure what the issue could be. My plugs are good, coil packs are good, battery is good (although it wouldn't hurt to test it). Any help would be appreciated, I'm a busy college kid so any chance of narrowing down the problem before I tackle it would be great. Thanks in advance!

I don't have experience with this particular problem in my 4Runner, but I did in my Mercedes.

Warm start problems sometimes have to do with sensors. Check the Ohms (no idea what the correct ohms should be, but a service manual should) on the crankshaft position sensor and see if it's reading correctly at the temp you are having trouble with. Essentially the sensor monitors the speed of the crankshaft, which influences the ignition timing, which might be causing your problem.

Starting problems are either fuel, air or spark.

depending on miles could be fuel pump or pressure regulator, mine is the same way, sometimes it fires right up sometimes it takes a bit longer. My rig is over 1/4 million miles so for my personal I'm replacing pump, filter, pressure regulator.

Yeah I'm closing in on 200k so I should probably check out both of those as well. How long has this problem persisted on yours? Also any check engine lights on with yours? Thanks for the help

Toyotayoda might be on to something. May I suggest you turn on your ignition switch without turning over engine, listen for the fuel pump to run up pressure, then start it. Any difference? My theory is that with a hot engine the fuel in and around the engine expands and makes its way back to the fuel tank, leaving a low fuel pressure condition in the fuel rail. Actuation fuel pump prior to starting builds pressure back up

It doesn't work like that with these trucks.
Engine has to be cranking or running for the fuel pump to work.

I know it works like that with a lot of GM products though.

mine has been like that since I got it a year and a half ago, I bought it with the condition knowing that the 2 common fail points of the fuel system are the anti-drainback valve in the pump and the injector pressure regulator. my pump is putting out the proper pressure, it just doesn't always hold for the specified amount of time. After christmas it's on though, all the little quirks are being fixed, and some much needed updates are being performed. Satoshi grill mod, body lift, e locker, fuel system, lunch box locker in the front, 99 center console and more. Time to bring this rig up to 21st century spec.
