this is my first toyota 4runner. and I have many questions seeing as how after only having it for a few hours I am in love even though it has some minor flaws. Bob Ross would call them happy mistakes cause Im telling you shes perfect just the way she is. what is that button on the dash left of the steering wheel and to the right of the rear defrost button? mine has the plastic cover indicating what it is for missing and its driving me crazy. also please see http://www.toyota-4runner.org/classic-t4rs/35128-auto-manual-locking-hub-swap.html

On a 5 speed its the clutch by-pass button. On a auto is just a covered up hole.

The square button hole is for power mirrors.

Jamming your auto hubs will have a significant decrease in fuel economy, and they will bind on sharp turns. I can tell quickly if my hubs are locked in 2WD.
Manual hubs go on ebay for $50-$100. Well worth the investment. Make sure you have all the parts. I was missing a lock washer and a 2nd 54mm nut, and when I just had my bearings and brakes replaced, the mechanic said it was a wonder my wheels never fell off.

dead in the water
so im driving down the street last night no problems, when all of a sudden she dies and i loose steering and brake power, i throw it into neutral and try to start it and only got a horrible sounding chug-a-chug sound. I put her in gear while im still moving to try to get her to roll over - and she rolls with semi-descent sound but the tach doesnt register at all and end up having to skid to a stop under the blue line "L" stop at western ave. (real safe i know) So i order a tow (whoi doesnt show till 2 am) to my mechanic (who doesnt open till tomorrow). I pulled the alternator this morning to have it tested (which was bad) replaced it, gave the battery a fresh charge for a few hours, she now turns but still wont fire ... any ideas? any suggestion will be gratefully noted and examined
