Truck randomly shook like crazy this morning

Hello fine gentlemen

Driving to work this morning in a torrential downpour. pulling away from a stop light and all of a sudden the truck starts shaking like crazy (probably doing about 35-40 mph)

hmm..that's weird. this road wasn't this shitty yesterday...

wait a minute...this isn't the road....maybe i'm kinda hydroplaning?

The truck was shaking under acceleration. It seemed to change when i messed with the overdrive. It seemed to go away when the overdrive was off and the RPM's were around 2k. Turn it back on and the TQ locked up and it started shaking. I did not notice any noise or feel any vibrations around the transfer case or trans shifter outside of the fact the whole car was shaking.

I slowed down eventually and found it to be running a bit rough at idle...I had it in 4wd as i was actively trying to troubleshoot. no idea if this had any effect on any vibrations. turned around to go home and it kinda just cleared up. Rest of the drive was fine.

Anyone have an opinion on whether this would be a misfire or engine issue versus a drivetrain issue? I've milkshaked before so the second my truck does anything I basically go into the fetal position and look for the nearest 0%APR promotion on a credit card.

If it didn't have a CEL, i'd assume it wasn't a misfire? also, misfiring doesn't make the truck shake all that bad, in my experience.

But since its raining, it could be a misfire. Shorting out spark.

To me it sounds like you had a clogged injector. Go pick up some injector cleaner from Vatozone and hope it works. Clogged injectors don't always light up the CEL.

If it didn't have a CEL, i'd assume it wasn't a misfire? also, misfiring doesn't make the truck shake all that bad, in my experience.

But since its raining, it could be a misfire. Shorting out spark.

Believe it or not, I have had a misfire in my t4r so bad that it shook the entire truck like I was driving on an old logging trail. I actually thought it was drivetrain, but I also had a CEL pop on at one point so I was able to see the misfire code to point me in the right direction.

My first guesses would either be really bad mis (like lost a cylinder or 2) or possibly ujoints or driveshaft related issues.

It sounds like a misfire. They tend to happen more under load. So try brake torquing it to see if it misses. I have see no cel with intermittent misfires. Sounds like it was raining from what you said and the humidity seems to make it happen more on my experience. It sounds like an arching spark plug wir, coil, or coil boot.

Went through this with my wife's truck a few months ago. Didn't always have a check engine light, so it was a bit confusing.

Took it to O'Reillys and had them scan, came up misfire cylinder 1. Changed out all the spark plugs (had a spare set). Took out single electrode autozone brand. Figured that was the culprit. A couple days later, stutter at 45-50 is back...shakes the whole damn truck.

Next thought it may be the coil pack. Switched it out with a new one. Same thing...fine for a couple days then comes back shaking like Muhammed Ali.

Finally, I took a look at the injectors after running a cleaner. The seal had gone bad, so air was getting into the system.

Bought a $7 seal kit locally and changed it out. after realizing that the old ass seals (308k) on the other two injectors were shot, I replaced seals on the other two. Put everything back together and its been running like a dream.

A driveshaft issue could definitely only show up under load, yes.
