Truck rolls when parked in gear?

My Ebrake doesn't work on my new to me first gen 4runner. I tried to park it on a very steep hill ( My driveway) and it rolled back a few feet and caught then rolled back then caught. I figured it would roll down the hill into my neighbors house. Question is does this mean my tranny may be going bad? I haven't had one do that before but I don't typically park them on the steep of the hill if I can help it. My wife's new Impala dumped it's tranny on the same hill. Dealership said they had never seen that before.

Well that is odd. I've never have heard of that before to be honest. My parking brake works occasionally but I always leave it in gear and have never had an issue with it even on stuff that seem very steep.

id guess the engine was turning over. that's why it rolled...then caught then rolled some more.

you could try parking it in low range, that may help, or chock the wheels with a block/brick something. but I think better to not park it on that steep of a hill.

Or could it be bad compression? Since you are in gear, its trying to manually rotate the crankshaft, and with low compression it might be easier, allowing it to roll. So rather than jumping to the strait into tranny issues, it may be engine issues.

Not sure on the engine issue. It is a SR5 V6 and seems to run very well. It has about 180K in it. I would think if it had lower compression it would run poorly but may be wrong. The engine is off and it is parked when this happens. I haven't had any issues with it rolling when it is running and I am driving up the hill if that is what you where thinking.

Never mind they don't offer it for the V6. I have always liked my v6 yotas but there is not a lot of love for them.

Check your compressin. I'll bet its weak.

Fix the ebrake.

If you don't want to fix the problem, get a wheel chock block.

The tcase ebrake isn't any better than your stock ebrake. It's used when you convert your rear axle to disc brakes and lose the ebrake function in the rear drums.

Thanks I will get the brake fixed this week just concerned about it rolling when parked in gear never had that problem before. If it has low compression doesn't that mean a head gasket or rebuild is in my near future?

sorry, that's just not true. maybe you don't like it, just as you don't like dual cases. a driveline brake is MUCH better than a standard parking brake. well, I should say its much stronger, and more affective. also, if you put it in 4wd you now have a 4 wheel park brake. something you cant do with the standard one.

also, a driveline brake multiplies its brake strength by gear ratio. so its doesn't have to be THAT strong to hold the vehicle. it may not work out for everyone, but it is better.

Wait wait wait, when did I say I didn't like dual cases? I like 'em just fine, and I'd probably like them better if I had a set. It's your automatic transmission I enjoy flickin' crap at you over. And I don't even not like those, but it's fun to fight about. :)

Anyway, driveline brakes. Unless I need to go back to physics class, the gear ratio in the diff actually reduces it's effectiveness, doesn't it? Taller gears = longer lever, right? Combine that with less friction surface than a pair of brake shoes, and I don't think the tcase brake is as effective as the stock parking brakes.

What I dont like about the drive line brakes (normal breaks more than e brakes) is that if you loose a drive shaft or break an axle shaft, youve lost braking power to that wheel

Id have to check the website, but I thought the Ebrake kits didnt work with the torsion bars.

I left my manual v6 in 1st when my parking brake went out. We have some hills, and on most things it was fine but on steeper ones it wasn't. I once left it on a steeper part of our driveway, and it looked fine, but coming out later it was nosed out into the quiet street.

Basically until you fix the cable, either don't park on a steep hill, or put blocks behind the tires. While I replaced my cable the first time and then again (new cable had or got a burr on installation, but a pull from the junkyard has worked fine) I just parked on flatter areas.

not according to all-pro.

The kit hooks up directly to the stock parking brake cable. This kit provides dramatically increased braking over the stock parking brake--with fewer parts to maintain and no cables hanging low to be snagged by rocks! This setup takes advantage of the gear ratio in the differential to multiply the force applied to hold the truck in place--it will hold truck on a 45 degree hill with the tranny in neutral!

true. but you would still have the other 3 wheels holding.

Thanks guys, my 93 v6 never did that so I was hoping it wasn't an issue. Do to my current confinement in a wheel chair my mechanic is coming to pick it up over the weekend and go through it for me. He is going to fix the e brake, tune it up, fix the rear window, and hopefully get the AC working. If the AC fix is to expensive I may get a soft top instead. I want to get one anyway. It may be tough though with no AC it was already almost 90 here and summer isn't even here yet.

Actually you and all pro are right about the diff making it easier to hold the truck in place. I do want to point out however that unless you have a locker in your axle, a trans style brake can still slip even with the driveline completely locked because of the open diff. This would only occur if one wheel is having less friction than the other wheel however which is a rare occurrence. It basically would work as if you threw an automatic trans into park. It'll lock up the driveline, but your wheels technically can still slip due to the differential. So for offroading purposes I prefer the standard e-brake when adjusted properly. I am sure the trans style brake works fine in about 99% of cases though assuming its installed correctly.
