True gps navigation and a 2 way radio

I recently moved to rural Maine (caribou) and will be doing a fair amount of back woods and logging road exploring/camping.
I was told to invest in a Maine almanac and gazetteer so I picked one up
Im wondering if there is some sort of true gps navigation system I can put in my car that will function where I don't have cell service
Also I was told that the logging trucks communicated via a two way radio of sorts and not a standard cb radio, what would I be looking for if I wanted one that way I am hear what points the logging trucks are at so I'm nkt in their way?

Check out the Backcountry Navigator app, you can download an entire state or more of maps and trails to a tablet or your phone and use it in conjunction with your device's GPS when you don't have cell service. My brother has it and says it works excellently.

GaiaGPS on a cheap android tablet (just make sure it has GPS or get an external USB or BT GPS receiver for the tablet)

I'm using an Asus Zenpad 8 (bought for about $100), i was using my phone but i like a larger map so i bought the tablet. GPS works but the compass in it isn't great.

i think loggers up there use CB and MURS

I'll definitely look into both of those systems!
Does anybody know of a head unit that would rival those in accuracy? I don't currently have a double din head unit but I've been thinkin about getting one
Would it be worth it to try to find a stock nav box (the one that mounts over the rear passenger wheel well) and incorporate that into a head unit ?

I'm old school and still use paper maps and the gazetteers, but I did buy a used Garmin Nuvi on ebay for $20 and it has been very useful in forests and parks. The garmin maps are more detailed than I expected (and current), but I have used the gps coordinates many times to pin point where I am on the paper map. They are also small enough to carry when hiking and usually run for a few hours on battery power.

I'll second the backcountry navigator. I even use it on my phone when backpacking.
I loaded it on a 7" tablet with built in GPS. doesn't need phone service or wifi except when loading the maps before you go out.

you can also see that i have an in dash CB radio. took a little work to squeeze that in there.

FWIW, I use:
- Backcountry Navigator on my tablet (primary cause the maps are better than in Earthmate)
- Delorme InReach with companion Earthmate app on my phone and tablet (secondary)
- Traditional paper maps (tertiary)

As for the 2-way question... HAM? GMRS?

If 2-way communications need to be in the mix... without a question... digital ham radio with GPS...

Really depends on the gear but you can have a pretty elaborate setup with ham gear.

Garmin inReach works anywhere in the world and is linked to an SOS center if you get into trouble. It is a gps as well as a global text message communication device that Bluetooth to your phone or iPad. They are amazing. There is a subscription but you can choose a plan that works for you. We routinely travel where the closest cell coverage is 50-80 miles so this is amazing for us. And you can share your maps with people which allows my wife to track where we are if we are out of touch to long. I have also used it while I was 500 miles offshore on a boat to. Loggers will not be using HAM radio as it is against the law to use it for business purposes.
Could result in a $10,000 fine.

Per Maine Guide Tips “Rules of the Road” loggers should use MURS or CB radios.
I suspect that a call to a local logging company would be the best way to find out what is being used in your area.
PS: Caribou Maine hope you will have some relly good down clothing for the coming winter.
