Trying Something New Tire wise...

FWIW, Nitto now makes the 265/70-17 Terra Grappler in an LT version. See their website for details. Based on my experiences with the P rated version, this will probably be my next tire.

I most likely will , but checking my options . I have had so many sets of these and am very familiar how they handle , ride ect... kinda like an old girl friend you meet up with once in a while.:D

It has been a while, Thai.

Glad someone remembers my curdmudgeonly manner! I kinda "took off" back in Feb or so in 2006. My father was diagnosed with cancer on Jan 2005 and I've been taking time off driving back and forth from Nor Cal to So Cal to see him and taking him from one hospital to another. In 2006, his health went downhill fast and I spent a lot of time caring for him until the end in mid July 2006. My interest in things went on the back burner for a while and I started back recently--just lurking here for a while before chiming in.

Been collecting some fine time peices lately and spending a lot of time on timezone.com on the Omega and Rolex page. I go by "ms.annthrope" on those pages as you guessed it. I am a bit misanthropic--just a bit.

Bought a new Omega Speedmaster Pro--the moon watch this last April to add to my Omega Speedmaster Legend Limited and my 22 year old stainless Rolex Submariner. My Dad was very proud of his vintage gold Omega Constellation and while laying in the hospital told me where I could find it. That is now in a safe deposit box. After his passing I bought a gold and stainless Rolex Daytona and had it engraved in memory of Dad.

Sorry for the long spiel. That's where I have been and glad to be back on the BEST 4-RUNNER PAGE IN THE WORLD.

We now return to the tire discussion.

I would like to go to a "LT" "C" rated myself next , the usually have about 3/32 add'l tread depth. ( nitto too)

This is true and most people overlook it

The only thing that stinks about the "LT" tire is the ride is sometimes quite hard on some brands of tires.

The only LT "C" that I ever has was the BFG AT. They seemed to do ok ride wise on my big truck but I had one set on my Explorer that after 40k or what ever was a killer.

Probably because of the 2 ply side wall there there is like no give there and when the tread can absorb some of the shock , once that wears it seems like it more pronounced.

I' tempter to go to another "P" tire so the ride is decent . Thats why the GY SA grabbed my interest , but still loose 3/32 tread depth. The Nitto is a lighter weight side wall and still a "C" I think its a 2 ply side wall. If I would go to a deeper tread like in a Revo then is "E" rated ..... to much IMO.

Not being a wuss , but still want a nice ride to it.

Nitto is either P or E.

Nitto's site still lists either a P or E for 265/70/17. No C. Darn. That so limits the selection of decent LT/C class. yes the LT C will be a bit stiffer in the sidewalls. I believe the LT class uses thicker strands of wire to form the belts as well. I had the D load on my tahoe nad it felt good. The stiffer sidewall provided a "firmer" more stable response during turns--less swaying and rolling feel.
As the tread wears down, there is less tread depth to absorb the vibrations and rumbling and it transmits it to the belts and the sidewall, ultimaltey to you.

Howeve,r you have deeper treads, stronger construction--less likely to puncture and tear compared to the P class tires, carry a hearvier load, adn to a certain extent more tolerant of heat and stress. I enjouy drivng all over the desert and at times cover parts of Nevada, Mohave Desert in Southern Cal, running over to Las Vegas or Barstow area. Even while driving on aspahlt, 110 degree days cna generate a lot of heat to the tires. I just feel better rolling on LT tires than P tires.

That is the trade off. Safety, traction, perforamcne over softer, quieter, soccer mom tires.

well i have about 10k miles on these now and im still in love. although i haven't had a chance to really take them threw their paces in the dirt. from what i have, they did amazing. quick little mud field, they handled great and cleaned very well. on the wet roads, i feel much more confident then i did with the flops. in the dry they handle great, only thing is they give off some vibrations at 90+ mph...but how often does the truck get that high? personally i would like to check my balence, because they do shake quite a bit now. and of course there is a hum with the windows down, but music drowns it out nicely haha

Its been a few more months. Any updates on the tires? Do you still think they are worth it?

theyre deffently worth it. they grip the dirt very well and i have been really impressed with the snow, ice, and wet traction. the only gripe i have is that they are alittle noisy on the road. and they are wearing in the rear quick. its been 25000 miles and they are going down in the back. but they whole pressure and the sidewall is impressively strong. in my line of work i curb hop alot because if i respond to a call i have to hop up to the side of the road to not block traffic and they flex pretty good.
