Trying to get new keys cut for '93 SR5

Bought a '93 SR5 about a year ago. Got one original key with the truck, and promptly had a couple copies made at the hardware store for my wife and myself. Through some unfortunate circumstances, the original key subsequently got lost. I recently went to the local dealership to get some new keys made from the VIN, as my copies are starting to wear down. The dealership's first effort seemingly used the wrong key blank, as it was physically too wide to even make it a little way into the key-hole. The second one they tried would go in, but the profile of the key was completely wrong, and wouldn't open any locks. I had them double check the code, same deal. I left frustrated.

The original key, and the copies I have, open all the locks, including the glovebox, making me think they're probably the original locks. The truck is also in mint condition. The VIN on the title matches the ones on the doors and the dash. Does anyone have any similar experience? Anybody have any ideas on what could be going on? Experience working at a dealership - did they screw up? Thanks in advance for any help you all can provide!

Just had the local dealer make a copy of the master key(black plastic top, etc) as the original looked like it might break in half. New key fit perfect and much tighter. Possibly, someone jumped the VIN(changed tags) or it had a theft issue in it's previous life(ie needing new lock set).

Maybe they put in the wrong vin or just had someone who didn't know what they were doing there.

The PO for mine talked endlessly about how you should always go to the dealership and have them stamp you a new one, instead of cutting one from a current key. But in the 9 years I've had it I've never needed to get a new key. I have at least 4, though they key I've been using all this time is starting to not work as well in the drivers door. Unfortunately since it works fine in the passenger door, it's probably the pins in the lock getting worn down.

Personally I wouldn't think all of your keys would get worn down in such short order. If the dealership can't make it right, just take a good working key to a place like Ace or Home Depot. They'll cut you a copy for $1-$2.

(it's always possible that the truck was rekeyed at some point, but I'd bet the person at the dealership just messed up)

I had the same issue of aftermarket keys being to "thick" to fit into the keyholes. I had keys made at 3 different places and still had the same problem.
I solved this by taking the key to a belt sander and making it thinner... be careful though, safety first!

Bumping an old thread with my .02

Pull the passenger door lock cylinder out, it will have a code on it.
Take that to the locksmith and they will cut a new one.

Big box stores don't know $hit about keys, been there done that.

Just went thru this with my new to me 4Runner and wanted to add info for the next guy.

^^^^ this ^^^^ as long as the locks have not been rekeyed then any good locksmith can look it up and cut you as many as you need.
