My question is: Does having an aftermarket catback system (Borla, Magnaflow, TRD, etc) installed help in anyway with this issue?

How about if an aftermarket catback system is installed with the exhaust pipe curved to the side?

It appears to me that the Toyota corporation can NOT effectively totally reapir this sulfur smell issue "without" hampering thier LEV standards. I truly believe this is the real problem with toyota's large engines as they can't afford to lose the LEV standards in states like CA,NY, and others in the northeast.

For me the switch to the Magnaflow made it worse. This together with the bad resonance I'm strongly concluding that this exhaust was a bad idea.

I had the 'fix' done, but the smell is still there. It's not quite as bad as it was before, but still bad enough so that I don't roll the back window down (which sucks, becuase I was really excited about that feature on the 4Runners). I'm considering getting a new exhaust put on with a pipe that comes out the side. That should fix the issue of the smoke coming into the cab, but I'm sure that it will still smell bad.

WRONG! FYI - There are a few people on here who have reported that the side exhaust does nothing to cure the stinky problem!

It is annoying. My wife thought my dog had the worst gas in the world (he rides in back)!

But my plan is to wait untill about 75k miles (the TSB goes to 80k) and have them replace it - I only have 25k to wait. Then I'll have a new one!

I just noticed the smell the other day on the freeway. Punched it to pass some jackhole, and imidiately noticed the smell... I will check my vin and bug my dealer tomorrow...

My truck is at the dealer right now getting the sulfur dioxide TSB fix. They had to order pipes and other small items. For those who think they "DO NOT" have this stinky smelly odor should drive with your rear window down about 1/3 of the way. Do not have any other windows in your truck rolled down or partially opened in order to get the full effect of the smell. Also, the sunroof should also be closed along with the HVAC control set on recirculate. NOW.......drive onto a vacant freeway entrance ramp and "PUNCH" the gas to get on the freeway. Make sure your vehicle is completely warmed up.......the smell is more obvious when engine is hot. If you do not smell the odor.....slow down then punch it as if you were passing another vehicle. Trust me....YOU WILL SMELL this funky odor.

I have noticed during the summer while I am in rush hour traffic in So Calif. traffic jams that other traffic maintains a n increased following distance behind me. I could imagine how this odor would stink up someone's vehicle when sucked into the A/C system. It is fun to pay the sucker who cuts you off back by getting in front of them and then accel/decel just to stink up the air behind me.

I'm also having the 6 driveshaft zerks lubed to stop the rear end noise on some turns.

The dealer is also ordering new rivets to tighten up the rear body molding panels on both sides of the truck. The darn things have loosen up so much that you can shake them when I waxed the truck. BTW, I only have 13,500 miles on the truck. I will do a followup to the sulfur smell and the rear end noises!

I just wanted to know what the parts are for the TSB. I currently have installed a trd dual and notice it less. I have a 04 v8.

Would I still be able to get this done?

Same here...I have the TRD dual exhaust and dont notice it too much (and I usually drive pretty sporty)...I have noticed it a few times though.

The TSB posted earlier says "Front Exhaust Pipe Assembly"...the TRD is cat-back so I assume the TRD is considered "Rear Pipe Assembly" not front. So the tsb should be applicable to ours as well...any ideas/comments??? Should I make a trip to the dealer?
