Tsubakimoto timing chain kits

I recently purchased a Tsubakimoto timing chain kit for the 22R-E engines used in 1985-95 4-Runners and pickups (also on 1985 Celicas) that has single row timing chain with 96 links for $97 CDN with free shipping.

timing chain disaster

When I bought my 4runner the timing chain was already making noise. I drove it for a couple of months which was a mistake.

It turns out that the previous owner had a timing kit installed at some point that included plastic chain guides and all around cheap parts. Plastic guides aren't good because the drivers side guide tends to break which is what happened.

When the guide breaks it falls down into the oil pan and then the chain starts to rub/smack against the side of the timing cover. Eventually it will wear a hole right through the timing cover into the water pump inlet or the impact from the chain on the timing cover will break the seal where the timing cover gasket meets the engine which is what happened to mine.

When the seal goes you end up with a huge mess. coolant and oil was leaking all over the place and coolant was getting into the oil and vice versa.

Timing kit

I should tell you about this even though you already bought a kit.

I ended up buying a timing kit from engnbldr on ebay. He also sells kits from his own site but they seem to be cheaper on ebay. I noticed you listed him as one of the sources and I'd recommend him.

The kit I bought included all of the timing parts including a metal backed drivers side guide, a pre-stretched chain, japanese tensioner. I also got a new timing cover, oil pump and water pump. He also answered my questions promptly.

The crazy thing was that I got it all for $160. Most timing kits alone that have a metal guide cost that much.
