Tundra 17" split 5 spokes or 16" LC 80 series wheels?

Alright, I'm having a hard time deciding which wheels and tires to go with.... so it's time to ask for the T4R community opinions.

I currently have the 17" Tundra split five spoke wheels (silver not gunmetal) on stock size tires at basically '99 tall height.

I'm rebuilding the King coilovers and installing LC 7.5 wraps for ~3" lift.

I have a set of 16" 80 series land cruiser wheels that need some refinishing (and paint.... color??).

I have the Tundra 231mm brakes, so I'd have to get 1/4" spacers for the front or do some grinding on the calipers and/or LC wheels to get them to fit.

Do I stay with the 17" Tundra split spokes or go with the 16" 80 series wheels after putting in the effort?

Obviously tire choices are a bit less $$ in the 16" wheels.

But then I have to decide to get Duratracs or BFG ATs (or Treadwright Wardens??)

the runner is still a most of the days truck (at least 6 days a week). Mostly need good snow performance for skiing in Tahoe in the winter. Will go down to Pismo on the dunes at least once or twice a year. Hopefully will meet more of you guys and get out on some trails once the lift and tires are on....

I am partial to the 17's, myself.

I think the 80's look a bit dated on the 3rd gens =/

The 17's are great looking wheels, but something about their appearance similar to the Dakota wheels gets to me.

I went with TRD 16's and I'll have to admit they have really grown on me.

I was after the 17's but couldn't find any. They are pretty hard to come by in Canada.

I really like the LC80's because it gives a more retro look. Just my opinion on that.
I put some work into refinishing my set and I could never get tired of how it looks now.

Though I think the Tundra wheels do come in 2nd after the LC80's. :]

I can't find them anywhere for a decent price. If you aren't looking to sell them, could you tell me where you found yours?

I like the look of both and wow those bronze LC's posted above are sweet! I'd stick to the Tundra's though since you already own them and I personally think a 17" wheel really compliments the 3rd gen.

Maybe try something different and get the Tundra's painted a dark bronze/gold? Always wanted to see that combo on a black 3rd gen.

17's are what i'm working on right now. I didn't look twice at the LC's. They look great, but the bigger rims looks great on these things. Especially with a 33.

Yeah, if I go with the 80s I'd probably sell the Tundras. They were on the rig when I bought it a few months ago.

I already own the LC wheels. I just have to put in the effort to refinish and paint them.

17s so you can clear the 231s without a spacer is my vote!

If I've read the forums correctly, I don't need to run a spacer... I can just grind a bit of material from the wheels and/or calipers to alleviate the clearance issues.


Thanks for all the feedback... guess I'm still on the fence.

But what about tires?? Duratracs or Treadwright Wardens?
By my calculations new tires could range from about $675 all the way up to $1150.... quite the difference.... Are the duratracs worth it? Snow traction and wear far and away better than treadwright? Or is the savings from TW worth a bit more risk?

I would definitely stick with the tundra wheels. Those are easily my favorite oem wheel. Is even leave them the silver they are. Maybe gunmetal but with the black unlike the silver look they have on the black.

And I'll be picking up the duratracs this fall. Not sure where your located but im in the northeast and looking forward the the snow and ice traction they provide. I had bfg at/ko's on my other t4r and they were a little disappointing in the winter. Especially braking.

Keep in mind it will take more than a 1/4" spacer to clear the 231's with the LC rims. That is needed for the 199mm, but I believe the 231's are larger and need more of a spacer.

I thought the LC wheels would clear the 199mm tundra brakes without any modification or spacers?

Regardless... I'd probably go the grinder route instead of spacers anyway.

Yeah Rickashay has the 199's with LC wheels and he needed 1/4" spacers. ARKRWLR has the 231's and used 1.25, but that was overkill.

Tundra 17" on a 1999 Limited, OEM ride height

Hey guys, I have a question I'm hoping you might know the answer to.

I have a '99 4Runner limited with the standard OEM flat spoke 5 star 16" wheels and the regular 265/70 R16 tires. It has the "tall" OEM coils that are about an inch taller than the OEM coils over other years.

Initially, I wanted to increase tire size to the 265/75 R16 but now I'm thinking of upgrading to the 17" tundra split spoke 5-star wheels to make the side wall smaller, therefore maintaining turning rigidity with the larger diameter tire. My questions are:

1) What is the rim width difference between the 16" OEM wheel versus the Tundra 17"

2) What would be the right tire size on the 17" tundra wheel to match the 265/75 R16 diameter?

3) Will there be any rubbing issues?

I have the 17's and although I love them and don't plan on getting rid of them I secretly have been wanting a set of the 80's as well. I think they look great and you don't see them nearly as often as the 17s.

1) The 17" tundras are 7.5" wide versus 7" for the T4R stock 16"
2) Go with 275 70 17
3) Most likely not.

Quick thread resurrection....

So I went with the LC 80 wheels. No spacer required to fit them over the tundra 13WL 231mm calipers. Clearance is tight but it works.

17" tundra split 5 spokes will go up in the classifieds soon. What's a fair price to list them?? They're clean, no rash, paint is great, a couple of dings, but not noticable.


Now just need to figure out what color to paint the 80 series wheels....??
