Tundra Brake Help

Hey all,

I finally got around to installing my 199mm TBU today, except I'm stuck...

1.) The brake pads I got are apparently for the 231mm calipers and not these ones because they won't fit. Akebono ACT976 ProACT Ultra-Premium Ceramic Brake Pad Set are what I bought per a few recommendations in threads, but they don't fit in the calipers, so I'm guessing I got that wrong.

My old pads are actually looking plenty thick still though so I'm wondering if I can just reuse those? They fit into the caliper too, so do I just sand down the brake faces a bit and I should be good to go?

2.) The caliper looks to be the same damn size as the one I just pulled off. The numbers are different though so maybe they're just wider to accommodate the thicker rotor? I can't tell though, but I want to double check before throwing them on there.

Patiently waiting for help while my brake line is capped off. =)

Called my old man to confirm but his opinion was, yeah if they fit they fit. Plus they look to have quite a bit of life left so sand them down a little and have at it. Everyone concur?

Looks to me you just replaced a stock 4runner caliper with another stock caliper. The Tundra 231 and 199's are distinctively different than stock. They are much longer. This is why your dust shield needs to be trimmed.

EDIT: That number combination on the new caliper in your picture is the exact same number on my old calipers in the garage. I just looked at them.

Looks to me you just replaced a stock 4runner caliper with another stock caliper. The Tundra 231 and 199's are distinctively different than stock. They are much longer. This is why your dust shield needs to be trimmed.

Looks can be deceiving. The 13we caliper definitely has a wider slot for the rotor compared to the one I just pulled off.

Dust cover trimming really shouldn't be a deciding factor in what size brakes you go with. It's about the most trivial thing you can do on your 4Runner

...plus the ABS issues reported by 231mm owners, and the fact that I have the Limited 3-spoke wheels that would need to be cut down for 231mm calipers. Oh, and that I don't tow anything, and I put maybe 2-4k miles on my 4Runner every year since it's my fun truck.

So yeah, just more than I wanted to deal with considering there was a perfectly viable option in 199mm option that didn't require as much..."accommodation".

Anyway, it all went well, thanks for asking! This isn't an opinion thread on 199mm vs 231mm, and I won't let these two responses cloud my opinion of a forum that I've found invaluable since 2010. Thanks.
 
Yea those are definitely things that SHOULD be taken into consideration.

But, as I stated, dust cover trimming as previously mentioned by Another poster should not be what makes you decide one way or another.

Also, I don't think I ever mentioned anything about comparing the two.
Both are good options to the stock braking system.

You mentioned the "Limited 3-spoke wheels", and your signature says you have a '97 Limited. I was under the impression the stock brakes for that rig would be the 199mm flavor already- is that not the case?
 
The biggest problem with the stock brakes was the thin rotors warping super easy under heavy braking so you should benefit a lot from the 199's as they do allow you to run the thicker tundra rotors. The benefit of the 231's is only a slight increase in surface area. When people hear you have to cut the dust shield they think its some huge undertaking but it truly is a very minor procedure. I personally went with 231's because i like seeing sparks fly and I'm also running 17" Tundra wheels. As for ABS, i pulled the fuse and the dash bulb. Complete garbage on these trucks especially coming to sudden stops from low speeds on shitty California roads. ABS is for people who don't know how to drive. Congrats on your upgrade, make sure you bleed em good and you will notice a significant improvement :)
 
Ah, the Tundra 199 use thicker rotors- gotcha. The surface area of the 231 brake pad isn't the biggest advantage for me- it's definitely the larger diameter rotor giving the caliper more leverage on the rotor. Good to know the Tundra 199 rotor is thicker than the 4R 199 though.

Please see the pictures of the measurement differences I posted earlier to answer your question. Yes, they're both 199mm...but they're not the same width. The Tundra ones accommodate about a half inch thicker rotor.

Also, the only attitude I was giving was from trying to steer the conversation away from the merits of 231 over 199, and why I was a wrong for going with 199. I already bought everything and I was in the process of putting it on. Not to mention, my actual questions in my original post were about whether or not I can reuse my pads and if the 199 calipers are similar looking to the stock 4Runner calipers.

I got two responses to my original post and one was telling me that the calipers I got were the exact same as the ones I pulled off. While that post was happening, I was noticing that the gap for the rotor was different between the two, so I measured it and it turned out that was where the important difference was. The other was about why the offhand comment I made about trimming a dust cover was a stupid reason not to go with 231s. It wasn't the ONLY reason I went with 199s (as I explained), and it isn't a helpful comment anyway since I clearly already have all of the parts to do the 199s. I'm not going to suddenly come to my senses and just send it all back, now am I?

Think of my response more as an "really? This is what you're going to focus on?" comment. I'm not trying to hurt anyone's feelings, but come on, I had two questions and I wasn't asking for advice on 199 vs 231. I ended up answering the questions myself anyway, so what help was it to comment about some inconsequential part of my thread?

This. I was going to run 231s if I ended up getting aftermarket wheels, but I didn't and the T4R was relieved of daily duties so I decided to leave the wheels as is since they've worked great for me thus far. Getting the 231s and keeping my wheels would have also involved cutting away at my wheels, which makes no sense for me to do when there's a perfectly acceptable solution in 199 that doesn't require that much effort for a truck I don't daily anymore.

I bled them (took a lot more bleeding than I thought it would), and I'm going to bed them tomorrow in the mountains. I think it's one of the few places where I can stop quickly from 60mph without worrying about getting rear-ended! Hah!

Yes. I posted pics of the gap measurement in the calipers which would indicate about a half inch of difference in the rotor thickness.

I did see the pics of the ~5/16" rotor channel difference in the caliper, but I wasn't sure if the rotor was the same difference. Sometimes aftermarket calipers vary in tolerances in areas. I haven't had any warping or fade with my stock 199, but I know a lot of people do. Hope your new brake setup works well for you [emoji1360]

Hey thanks for getting me smart on the differences between the 199 and the 231. Learn something new everyday! I didn't realize the 231 was that much bigger. More importantly, I'm glad it all worked out for you!! I know you're going love the new brakes. One of my favorite mods! No more brake fade...

EDIT: Yes looks can be deceiving. From the pic they looked exactly the same to me. I was expecting to see the piston wider apart in the caliper.

pretty sure the tundra rotors are the same diameter, just thicker. hints why they still fit in the stock dust shield. The larger calipers are the reason you need to cut the shield and they house the larger pads which provide more surface area and thus stopping power.

You got it; the 199/231 is the diameter in mm. So- depending which "Tundra rotors" you're referring to- they are the same diameter as the 4R 199.
And you're on the right track as far as the surface area of the pad helping- but the leverage of the larger rotor is also very helpful in stopping power [emoji1360]

Also does anyone know if the limited wheels still have to be ground down if you do the 199 upgrade? Because grinding them for the 231 upgrade sounds like a PITA.

The 199 calipers fit without any grinding at all. Just did this on my truck a few weeks ago. Be careful because some threads tell you to look for parts for a 2001 Tundra, but for some reason this meant I got the wrong brake pads also. The correct brake pads for the 199mm calipers are the

You should be able to get them at the FLAPS for 45ish bucks, they're pretty ubiquitous.

The tundra ROTORS for the 199, do require a small amount of grinding on the dust shield so they rotate without rubbing. It took my all of 30 seconds on each side to grind them down to fit.

I'm sure the 231 brakes are better, but my truck stops pretty nicely with the 199s.

I put the 231's on my wife's 2000 limited with no clearance issues on the rim at all. Now...whether or not there are multiple limited stock rims, I couldn't tell you, they are the same as on my 1999.

So, the pads appear to be the same. I put it all back together with the old pads, and while the bleed seemed to take more cycles than I remember, it all works again.

I know for sure the limited wheels don't need to be ground down for 199s since that's what I have and that's the upgrade I was doing.

This is good to know! I'm saving that link for the Akebono pads for when I need to replace the ones I just reused.

I noticed the rotors were awfully close to that inside edge of the dust cover. I didn't trim it since I didn't think it was actually touching, but I noticed a loud-ish rubbing/scraping noise the first mile or two of driving, but it has gone away. I'm guessing it just ground it down on it's own or something. Hah!

Everything I read (which was everything there seems to be written on the TBU) said that the Limited wheels do need grinding to accommodate the 231 calipers.
