Tundra Brake Help

I think what you might have missed in the discussion of the Limited wheels not being compatible with 231s is that it's the 3-split-spoke Limited wheels. Those aren't the same wheels as yours. Glad it worked for you!

I don't have a pic of my buddies 97...he had 3 spoke rims that he was told came off of a Sequoia...if my memory serves, they look similar. We did not grind those ones and he has been fine.

As for all of your other arguments, go with the 199's. I am going to put them on my 1999 to compare to the 231's. With the 231's on snow and ice, there is a fine feel to go from braking to braking with abs...abs still functions fine in my experience compared to others saying it goes crazy over bumps....but without worrying about towing, I think the 199's are going to be fine.

Well, no worries either way since I already put the 199s in. I think 199 is a good compromise if you're not towing but live in a place that will work your rotors (like mountains). I haven't bedded them in yet since I haven't had a chance to find a road to do so and then let it sit for an hour or whatever. I did take it for a drive to the hills yesterday though and the brakes felt great. The real test will be after a solid year of mountain driving if they start to vibrate because they're warped.

I'm thinking this will be the last set of rotors I ever need to put on though since I only average a couple thousand miles a year on this now.
 
You got it; the 199/231 is the diameter in mm. So- depending which "Tundra rotors" you're referring to- they are the same diameter as the 4R 199.
And you're on the right track as far as the surface area of the pad helping- but the leverage of the larger rotor is also very helpful in stopping power [emoji1360]


i guess you misunderstood me... "Leverage of larger rotors" has nothing to do with it. The diameter of the rotors IS the same. The upgraded rotors are thicker. 199mm is caliper size. 231mm is UPGRADED CALIPER SIZE. You could run 231mm calipers on stock 4runner rotors if you wanted to...

FYI- 25mm= 1inch

231mm= aprox 9inches (the size of the caliper)

I didn't misunderstand you, I was just completely uneducated on what the 199/231 dimension was referring to, but thought I knew.
That's weird that someone originally referred to the caliper length, instead of the part number- and weird that it stuck as what everyone refers to the swap as. Even stranger, the pic in the TBU link you posted, shows the "231" caliper actually being over 10" in length- which is over 250mm. So why is that referred to as the "231"? As if an inch is a negligible amount. Obviously our stock rotors are larger than 7.8"(199mm), so I feel like an idiot for assuming the 199/231 was referring to rotor size.
 
The 199 calipers fit without any grinding at all. Just did this on my truck a few weeks ago. Be careful because some threads tell you to look for parts for a 2001 Tundra, but for some reason this meant I got the wrong brake pads also. The correct brake pads for the 199mm calipers are the

You should be able to get them at the FLAPS for 45ish bucks, they're pretty ubiquitous.

The tundra ROTORS for the 199, do require a small amount of grinding on the dust shield so they rotate without rubbing. It took my all of 30 seconds on each side to grind them down to fit.

I'm sure the 231 brakes are better, but my truck stops pretty nicely with the 199s.

Depends on size. If you go with 199 mm calipers they bolt right on. No cutting or grinding required. 231mm do require cutting on dust shield.

For the 199 rotor I did have to grind the inner part of the dust shield for the rotor to turn cleanly but all it took was a dremel with the little pink stone sander thingy and 30 seconds on each side. Easy peasy.

I just finished this mod on my 98 limited. I had to cut a very (and i mean VERY) small part of the dust shield so that the rotors didn't rub. Since i had the limited i already had the 199's so the calipers didn't cause any issues with my dust shield.

Pretty much this. Cut about 1/8th off of the shield right next to the calipers.

I did the 199 because it was cheaper and all i'm really after is not dealing with F'ing warped rotors.

Calipers were $40 a piece from the junk yard.

I think it must be the size of the brake pad the corresponding caliper retains. when i first did my swap i pulled the new rotors out of the box and thought they gave me the wrong ones cuz they were the same diameter.

For upgraded rotors you must grind a little on the inner dust shield to clear the inside diameter of the rotor.

For the upgraded 231mm calipers you have to cut the front outside edge of the dust shield in two places. Its about three inches of cutting altogether and extremely easy to do with a 7.5" cutting disc on a side grinder. I personally think it is easier to cut the two corners off for the calipers to clear than it is to grind the inner dust shield down to fit the rotors.

The biggest factor is the wheels hitting the upgraded 231mm calipers. I couldn't see grinding my wheels or the calipers so i just upgraded to 17" tundra split fives :)
