Tundra springs on Taco Billies

Hey guys,

In my last post I mentioned how I thought that it was a bad idea to put Taco Bilsteins on a 3rd gen 4runner because they are to soft. A lot of guys are saying that they have worked fine for them, and that my problem probably lies in the fact that I'm running old factory springs on them.

So my question is this(yes I searched prior to posting this), will Tundra TRD springs fit on Taco Billies, and how did the ride characteristics turn out?

I have the Taco Billie 5100's (F4-BE5-D558-T0) in 99 tall coils mounted up on the front of my 2000 SR5 with the snap ring in the middle groove of the three. I have Billie HD's (F4-BE5-2451-H0) on the rear, also with the 99 tall coils.

The springs had around 100,000 miles, and were considerably taller than the OE springs that came off of the 2000. The springs were actually the warranty coils that were put into my 1996 4Runner prior to my owning, but the paint codes indicated that they were the 99 talls. I pulled them off of the 1996 following a sideswiping that totaled the truck.

After the change the front ride height was 21-1/2" and the rear was 21" I needed a little more weight capacity in the rear, so I added a pair of Airlift 1000 air bags. The jounce stop that was a part of the coil spring warranty package was shortened by 4-1/4" (3 nubs or rings) for the installation. I generally run about 15 psi in the bags, and now my rear height is 22", and quite resilient to loading.

I had a 1998 Tacoma 4x4 SR5 before moving into the 3rd gen 4Runner platform, and had the 1996 4Runner SR5 set up with the Billies before swapping them into the 2000 SR5. I really like the ride of these trucks with this setup both on road and off. It has a moderately stiff ride, but does not drift around at speed when on a bumpy road or crossing railroad tracks (going too fast). Very safe and stable.

Thanks for the info. I have thought about buying some Tundra TRD springs, but I'm not sure if they will work with the Tacoma Bilsteins that I'm running. I'm sure they will bolt up, but my fear is that the spring rate and shock dampening won't work well together.

If someone is running the setup I'm talking about I'd love to hear how it handled.

How much lift are you wanting to gain from stock?
 
I went through Wheeleers Offroad and purchased the 5100 Bilstein shocks and OME springs for the rear of my 97. I put Tundra front coils on the front with these shocks. I set mine up for a 2" lift and the ride is not bad at all. I am not planning on a lot of mountain climbing, but a good back country runner and the capability to get through heavy snow when I need to.

So are you running the Tacoma(D558) Bilsteins up front with Tundra springs?

I have watched Speedy's videos and they are great. He ran the Tundra springs and shocks if I'm not mistaken. I would like to know if there would be any ill effects of running the Tundra springs on the Tacoma Bilsteins???
 
Do you already have the Tacoma Bilsteins? If not, why the quandary rather than trying what is known to work?

Yes, I already have the Tacoma shocks and I'm currently running factory springs. The springs have 145,000 on them and they're jus too soft. If I'm going to buy new springs I would like to buy the Tundra springs...if they'll work.
 
You guys have any advice on whether or not the Tundra springs will work on the Tacoma shocks? Should I go another route?
