Turbo 4 Runner

My 2004 SE V6 4Runner has this high pitch whine while accelerating. I know it doesn't have Turbo or SC (LOL) but what can make this whining high pitch noise? Only happens during acceleration and seem to originate up front. Thanks for any guesses and input.

My engine whined a lot until I replaced the drive belt, tensioner and pulleys.

I second a pulley. Mine was an idler pulley.

As mentioned it could be a pully,...or any of the moving parts that the belt drives, e.g. power steering pump, alternator, AC compressor or AC clutch, etc., etc.

That being said get a mechanic's stethoscope and use it to pinpoint were the noise is coming from, these can be prucahsed at most any auto part stores very inexpensively.

My brother's V6 FJ had this issue he noticed after running his fridge all night. We thought it was the alternator working harder to charge the battery back up. Sounded a lot like a supercharger!

Pulley sounds like a possibility. This noise I can only hear while driving. Pinpointing it will be tough because I'm unable to duplicate it while idling or reving the engine. Any thoughts on how to locate the culprit in this situation?

Pulleys would whine with engine RPM regardless of load, so if it doesn't whine when parked it must be something else...

Mine doesn't whine but it makes more of a whistle noise when I accelerate hard. I believe it's coming from the pin hole in my air filter but it sounds cool. Probably not your problem but it's a thought.

This is exactly how it sounds, like intake whistle at 1500 rpm while driving only, though. Why I can't reproduce it while parked is mystery unless it is a drivetrain.

Had the same issue, thought it was that secondary air pump but realized I have an 04. Turned out to be one of the belts/pulleys that was replaced during the timing belt.

Had CV joint repacked and CV boot rebanded about a year ago, could low or high amount of grease cause that high pitch sound (like a turbo spooling up during acceleration)?
