Turbo question

I have had a lot of success with small turbos on my jeeps and a frontier. How do our engines hold up. Something small like a t28 at around 5psi. I can do all the fuel and timing changes myself with a plug in tuner. Seen some builds but haven't seen anything long term. The motor with just under 300k is the only thing holding me back from fabbing a kit up. Any advice would help.

TRD superchargers can be ran @ 7lb. without any fuel mods. So I would keep it @ 7 lb. or less. It's all on how it's installed, tuned(optional), and driven that really determines longevity. These motors can take forced induction, and some people here have installed chargers onto 5VZFEs with high mileage. I mean, with 300K on it, how many more miles are you looking for?

You could always fab a kit up and when the Runner dies, buy another Runner/Tacoma and swap the kit over. Or sell it. God knows if it's a halfway decent kit, you'll sell it in no time.

T28 seems like it would be way too small. I think even a T3 would be too small. Something like a T3/T4 would be more fitting.

What plug in tuner are you using? As far as I know, you'll need a piggyback of some kind, as directly tuning the ECM itself isn't possible.

Also, as far as not seeing anything "longterm", have you checked out Clownmeat's build thread? I think he's been turbo'd for over 2 years @ 7psi and is doing fine. His is a rear mount setup.

Or you can check out the turbo kits offered by CXRacing for the 5vz. Not sure I'd trust the Chinese turbos though. Ultimately, I'd like to use their manifold, and provide my own turbo.

T28 is small but it would still work. I think at 5-8psi you would be fine and could gain up to 10hp per psi. Ive seen them make over 300whp on 4 cylinders.

I would have to disagree about the T28. I think you would be too far to the right of the compressor map.

T28 worked great on a 4.0 wrangler. Came in at a lower rpm and for fuel milage and extra power was great. Added 75 hp at 6 psi.

I was talking with a Diablo tuner rep and he said they had a plug and play that would work.
