Tutorial for Replacing Water Pump on '00

I have a 2000 4runner V-6 and I need to replace the water pump, is it true that I need to do the timing belts as well?

Anyone know of a good picture/video tutorial? Is there anyway to do it with only replacing the water pump and coolant/ thermostat/ etc..?

Thanks in advance for the help!

The WP is driven by the Timing Belt. You have to remove the tension and get the belt half-off to remove the WP. You COULD reuse the old one, but, honestly, no one in their right mind would do so unless it were almost new. There is virtually no labor saving, and the object is to avoid going into the engine that far again anytime soon. If the WP was leaking, then the TB is probably toast anyway as coolant kills them, so you need to be ready to do it, regardless.

As far as how-to's, yeah, use the search. A search for 'replace timing belt' will probably get you more results. I'll give you one because I'm a softie and you're a newbie:

i did my timing belt first time ever i know very little just followed the wirteup's and have had zero issues

how long on average does it take you guys?

My one and only 4Runner TB took three afternoons of a hot July 4th weekend, with lots of swim breaks and included making the holding tool. Really took my time, going back to the computer how-to's etc., but it got done right. I spent more time than I should have looking for tools I hadn't used in a while and stuff to make the silly holder tool. I lost a few hours getting the crank bolt out, as my e-brake wouldn't hold (seized bell crank, I found out later) and I hadn't made the tool yet. Finally, I got the courage to do the starter bump. I would guess my second one would be about 4 hours (half as fast as Singtoe would be a good goal.)

I did a Hyundai Accent in 3 hours.

The starter bump is awesome. I did my first one on accident when I left the breaker bar on the crank pulley after lining up my timing. I about soiled myself until I realized what I'd done. Just make sure there's no hoses or wires in the way.

So just to be clear, because this is coming up for me, I gotta find or make the SST thingy, or I've got to completely remove the AC pump, right? No other options there? What direction does the pulley need to move in, any chance of shifting it with a ratchet strap or just a big lever?

There are those who claim to have pulled the hydraulic tensioner without pulling the A/C compressor, using 1/4" extensions and wobble socket. If you do that, you can recompress the tensioner in a vice--or install a new one--and do without that SST. You still need a pulley holder to torque up the crank bolt. That's a different SST, but it can be made from a 2x4 and some 3/8" bolts.

I would recommend against the lever technique. The tensioner must be compressed VERY slowly, or you will break the pulley bracket, as some have done by ratcheting the SST too fast. I can't imagine doing that with a lever and I can't think how you would get a ratchet strap on there.

i did removed the tensioner without removing the AC, very easy and without problems. 1/4 U-joint and patience.

Holy geez I am never ever buying an Audi.

Also, HOLY GEEZ I AM NEVER BUYING AN AUDI.

Also, how do I get Ashley's phone number?
Not my VDO. My wife's car is even more complicated. It has bi-turbo twin intercooled BS to mess with.

And Ahley is a carpet muncher (JK - I don't know who she is)
