two possibly dumb questions

errr more like sets of questions on two topics

First one: I need to replace my cv axles and the whole jacking procedure seems a little weird. Basically it seems you want to position the axle so it is parallel to the ground without out any bends, right? If that is the case, why jack the vehicle up at all? Is there any reason to take the tire off? Do you need to take the tire off to take the hub off? Is it possible to get to the flange bolts with the tire on?

Second one: Has anyone ever tried JB welding 1/2" pvc caps on the steering stop bolts? At 36 cents a piece I figured it would be worth experimenting with. The worst thst could happen is they get knocked off. Please don't make fun of me for this one.

You could possibly just use levitation to pull the cv shaft without even touching it.
Failing that you'll have to pull the tire and everything else to do it just like everyone else does.

Now idea #2, that's sounds more plausible. Give it a shot and tell us how it goes.
 
good learning process

had to do my cv axles when i first got my 4runner it takes time but thank god my work has a lift it took a min to get them out but after i was done i had a little more knowledge on how it all works so next time wont be such a pain:nod:
 
Pulling the axles is easier if you put the truck on jackstands with the suspension at full droop, and then use the jack to find that perfect angle where the CV will come free. While you've got the CVs out, remove the studs from the differential shaft flanges and grind down the splines or replace them with bolts, you'll thank me when you're putting the CVs back in.

You could do it with the tire on, I have. It's easier to remove the wheel than work around it, though.
