Picked up a new 2015 Trail with KDSS in Magnetic Grey Metallic. Traded in the 06, and sold the 97, so now my focus can be on the new one.

I'll be driving this for work and pleasure but have decided to go ahead and build the truck up like my 97 project to serve as an all around fun exploration style vehicle that can handle both current and future trips for years to come.

With this in mind, below is the gear list and build path I've decided to follow.

I'm really glad I did the 97 project as I learned so much about working on and maintaining 4runners that I can carry with me for the rest of my life. Sounds crazy but throwing myself into that project for the last 1.5 years really helped me deal with some tough times as I lost my Mom last year to cancer.

I really wanted that 06 to work out but it just needed too much more work and money and I just didn't feel like doing another rehab to get it where I would want it. Realistically, I should have just bought a new one to begin with instead of the 06 and been done with it.



No time wasted, as I figured out my suspension needs/wants and ordered a Radflo 2.5 setup without the reservoir. Not in the desert so I decided I didn't really need the extra reservoir which cut a few bucks off the list. Anyway, here is what I have ordered to get installed in a few weeks:

(2) Radflow 2.5 Front Coil Overs: Non-Reservoir but longer travel model
(2) Radflow 2.5 Rear Shocks: : Non-Reservoir
(2) Radflow Custom Wound 2" Lift Rear Coils
(1) Sonoran Steel Built Adjustable Trac/PanHard/Lateral Bar
(2) Camburg UCA with Moog Ball Joints
(1) Radflow 2.5" adjustment spanner wrench


If and when my 97 sells, or I round up more funds, I will be looking to add some Sleekster 4runner rocker/slider bars, a set of skid plates and possibly some heavy duty rear LCA's.

ARB makes a nice 1/8" thick skid plate set that goes from the front to past the transfer case. There is a KDSS version for the extra movement of the front bar.

I have these skid on our 2012 Trail, they are nice, inexpensive and light weight. 1/8" is a considerable improvement over the stock skid.

Big shout out for Steve and Sonoran Steel AGAIN! Steve has been a huge part of my success with my trucks. He has provided countless hours of guidance, advice, help, answers to my dumb questions, etc. I consider him a mentor and a friend at this point and am glad to know him. Hope to one day get to meet and wheel with you. So, as you can probably guess he helped me on my suspension choice above and the parts are ordered through Sonoran!

Off topic but do you remember emailing a guy a month ago or so talking about how to find trails here in Arizona, and you recommended that book Arizona Backroads and 4WD Trails?

Question though, as I'm considering purchasing one: Everything online shows that the regular Trail doesn't have KDSS as an option. And based on your cloth seats, you don't have a Premium. How did you get KDSS?

It is an add on option for the regular trails. I think it adds $1700 to the price per the sticker.

Thanks. I'm probably gonna try again at selling the 3rd gen but want to finish getting the interior and stereo installed in it. At that point I'm going to look at possibly removing a few items like the winch to use with the new one and maybe partial skids and roof rack to sell. That way I can get the price I want down a good bit and still offer a ready to go truck for sell.

Not sure why Toyota does this but from reading the forum here it seems they stock Trails with KDSS in certain areas of the US where they only stock Trail premiums with KDSS in other locations.
When I was shopping around here in Southern CA back in March I found that every trail I looked at had the KDSS option. Reading other threads it seems that back East it is difficult to find a trail with KDSS.
And to the OP that's a great price. For the same vehicle it MSRP'd at $38k over here. Varies in different parts of the country.

Decided I don't like the black/silver wheels on the truck and ordered a set of matte black FN countersteers instead. Debated about the light graphite but decided I wanted plain black.

Next up is to talk to discount tire about exchanging the nitto tires for some duratracs. Just not loving the nittos after some miles.

Discount Tire agreed to swap out the Nitto Tera Graphler ATs so I have to call them back tomorrow to confirm what I want instead. Leaning towards the GY Duratracs.

Talked to Sonoran Steel and my Panhard Bar and Bumpstops are ready to ship out. The Radflos are in que for build at Radflo with direct shipping to follow. And my Camburg UCAs are on order from Camburg.

While talking to Sonoran I also went ahead and ordered sliders. I went with the body mount Sleekster sliders.




Future order items once I sell the 97 to include:
Sonoran rear heavy duty lower links
Skids - leaning towards the ARBs or possibly RCI skids
Bumpers - still not fully decided but thinking about a Shrockworks front bumper.

After reading all night on tire threads now I'm leaning towards trying the Cooper ST Maxx tires in 255/80/17 on the new FN wheels. Any downside to the narrower tires?
