It'll be a good change. The '01 engine runs so much smoother, and is so much peppier!
I drove the '97 last night to make sure I got the toe good, and everything rode/drove right. I was expecting it to be peppy on the small(265/70R16) tires, but it actually felt exactly like it did on the 315's! My wife had to drop the dolly off this AM for me, so she has the runner today. I just talked to her, and she said it feels exactly the same- power wise- too. Really strange. Her and I have both had a lot of cars, and are very aware of whatever we're driving.

The '97 trans has nothing wrong with it at all.
The '01 supposedly has a bad torque converter. *
Drives just fine around the block though.Oh me too

I picked an '01 SR5 up Saturday afternoon. Thunder Cloud has always been a color I wanted to have someday, but all the Thunder Cloud rigs I've seen have had gray interior, and have been cloth.
The ONLY reason I decided to keep the '01(bought it to fix and sell) is because it has tan leather interior.

I think most would tell me "it's in your head", but I went back-to-back in my '97 and the '01, and it was just much less of a dog. Yeah; both are 3.4l 5VZ-FE.

It's possible they adjusted the timing through the years and didn't necessarily document it since it is the same engine. I know you can make big numbers with the right small adjustments and the right engines.

True! I haven't heard of tuning the stock ECU on these, so I'm not sure anyone has "unlocked" these ECUs to point timing/fuel maps could be looked at and compared.
Even still when I see any local to me, they never look good. We originally bought it to replace the 335i my wife drove. When she was looking, she specifically wanted the Anthracite with a black steering wheel/column cover. In '98, they went to a tan wheel and column cover that didn't so much tickle our fancy. Finding a rig with leather and a locker was a huge plus.
It's definitely a favorite color for both of us, but the change will be fun, and I'm stoked to get it all Tyler-clean.
Interior is pretty beat, but nothing I can't whip right into shape!

Trimmed it last night. Hoping to figure out a way to keep the flare piece on while I figure out a rear bumper. Not into rubbing, but not into the "missing-parts" look either.

I almost bought a 98 Black SR5 last week. Nothing special about it except it's spent it whole life in NY & had no rust! Auto trans, no locker, 220,000 miles but in great condition. $2800, second owner up the block from me only had it for the last 7000 miles. I passed because I need the money to renovate my garage...I'll regret that one for a long time.

)Getting all the little things that didn't bother me taken care of for the new owner.
Since I got the center dash swap from the manual '99 I got the trans from, it had no ECT switch. I just always left it on, and had the old switch tucked underneath till I did the manual swap-
Probably not the best for the new owner. So I pulled the panel from the '01-
The main wiring thread on swapping the center dash says to tie the green/red to green/red, and the black/yellow to black/yellow.
Thing is, the old switch has a black/brown, not black yellow. To add to that, I used the black/yellow for my defrost. I pulled the black/yellow from the connector, and activated my defrost. Without the black/yellow, the orange "on" light for the defrost is not lit. It's not lit.
So I checked what the old switch black/brown did, and it was the +12v supply. Checked the black/yellow, and it also had +12v.
All that rambling to say- I only needed to tie the old green/red with the new green/red, and the new ECT button works [emoji1360]
I also had tried to pull the ABS fuse- in hopes of turning the ABS light off- from having non-ABS knuckles installed. As some know, that fuse doesn't "pull". I didn't know that, so I destroyed it.
I swapped the '01 axles/knuckles/wheel hubs/brakes on to the '97, but I needed to un-bolt the old fuse legs, get a new fuse, and bolt it in. Got that done tonight too.
Since my AC pump seized- and I got a JDM pump, threw my old pump away, and realized the JDM pump is different [emoji30]*
- I got one from a buddy's parts rig. Installed it last night, but it's whining like a damn supercharger. It would be cool, but it's not supercharged. Probably going to do a new bearing in that for the new owner too.
