Tyler James Inc's OEM+ '97 Limited

Got my retrofits almost buttoned up.
Screwed up on the first one(passenger) by starting to clean it while it was still too hot(with Simple Green). Caused a film on it that couldn't be cleaned off. Tried to clean it with alcohol, and made it worse.

Driver side came out perfect, but didn't take pics of that one yet.

Anyone have a passenger side 99-02 headlight with a damaged lens I can buy cheap?! All I would use is the reflector from it.

Your pics are ridiculous quality. Are they from a smartphone or a dedicated camera?

You also don't look 41 years of age :P

BTW, after all that polishing and stuff, your 97 looks better than when it was on a showroom floor back in 96.

Haha thank you! The nice pictures are from our Canon 6D, and the average pics are my iPhone 7+.
41?! Well, I'm 29, so I'm glad I don't look 41 [emoji23] Does it say I'm 41 somewhere?

TYC on amazon is 40 per side

Yeah, I know. I'm wanting to keep as much OEM parts as I can. It looks like Chim is gonna come through for me once again though [emoji1374][emoji322]

LOL!

You said something about SAS'ing your pops '91 when you were 15. I maybe misunderstood that and read that you did that in 91 and were 15 then.

Anyway, nice job on the rig, def. one of the nicest 3rd gens in the 3rd gen section. I am in love with the Anthracite, and the lift/tire/etc combos you have done make it look like it still belongs on the street and not just the trails like so many builds here.

Did you paint those fender flares a different color or did they come like that? It doesn't look like the factory flare color on the 3G limited's which are more of like a solid grey.

Retrofits look great. Post some pics when you get it done. Ide be curious to see how much you had to mod the back of the headlight housing.

Starting to research retrofitting and it seems like the DS2 is the best option.

Man, it couldn't get any easier to retro our headlights with good D2S projectors. It seriously took me probably an hour on each headlight- from cracking open to re-sealing.
Nothing has to be modified- other than breaking off two nubs where the new projector bowl sits against the old reflector.

Haha! Oh that's funny. Yeah, it was a '91 pickup, and I guess that was in '01-02 sometime. Dang, that means brand new 3rd gens we're still available! [emoji41]
Hey, thanks a lot man, I appreciate that. I can't even tell you how much I love it too. Coilovers for the front would be amazing, and I really want to try OEM Tokico blacks for the rear. And gears. And... haha I'm really happy with how it's coming together though. Really excited about getting the front end together.
Yeah, the Dark Gray(156) is the factory color on the flares. It's got some pretty good sun fade on the front flares, but hey- what do you do? *♂️

Was no leveling of the projector required? Or does the little H4 adaptor take care of that?

And because I ain't too proud [emoji23]

Got me a Harlequin 4Runner. Haha
After I sold my corners, my buddy gave me the '99+ clears to rock till I get my OEM corners. While I had a mis-matched bumper and clear corners, I was like fk it- I'm putting the IJM grill on. Ain't care [emoji1308]

^I like your intentional attitude with the contrasting colors, you pull it off well.. & I respect the stock look! :bravo:

I may have missed it in your build but did you mention what all you had to modify to fit your 315s without a body lift?

[MENTION=100676]bsdoig[/MENTION] brought to my attention there isn't currently a good write-up of these new D2S 4.0's here. I wanted to share a couple differences-
The nut is now lower profile, and no longer requires cutting the back of the housing-

Also- as you can see in the picture above- I didn't have to drill any additional holes for my high beam coil or LED wiring.
Here's a few pictures of the one that turned out "perfect"-

Haha Thanks man! I'm definitely going to color match them ASAP, but in the meantime- I'm rockin it! When I put the bumper on, my wife was like "hey, it doesn't even look that bad with the bumper being Thunder Cloud! [emoji1360] Just don't put the green grill on! [emoji23]"
So, naturally, I had to put it on.
Define "fit" [emoji6]
Having as high of offset/backspace on your wheels as possible helps keep the scrub radius down, because it minimizes leverage- relative to the ball joints. The lower your offset/BS, the less your wheel/tire will move front-to-back in your wheel opening.
I have 5" backspace wheels, which is et0 offset on a 9" wide wheel. That's higher than anyone else I've seen run here. My sidewalls kiss the UCA's at droop, and rub the frame at lock. Not enough on either to worry about.
I pounded the pinch flat on the firewall, and trimmed my flare trim and bumper valance. I haven't rubbed once(on the body) since I went to 315's, but also haven't fully stuffed the front tires offroad. I WILL need to do more firewall work to fully clear, as well as relocate my washer fluid reservoir.
I've had the wheels/tires on for over 6 months, driven on steep angled driveways, some off-road trails, loaded, etc. and- like I said- haven't rubbed once. That being said, when I put the tires on, I was flexing it as much as I could in my driveway, and could tell it WILL contact the firewall if I really stuff the front up.

[MENTION=50342]JayRolla[/MENTION] gave me shit for my spacer lift, so I started lookin at TRD coils. Remembered my father in-law gave me the factory Bilsteins from his '04 TRD Tundra, and was thinking about using those with TRD YY/YB coils. I don't think I need the adjustable, as I'm trying to lower my rig down a little. I like how it sits, but I honestly don't feel like it's good on the front suspension to be constantly about maxed out. CV's at fairy high angles, BJ's at fairly high angles... I don't know, I just feel like it's not ideal.
I went out to dig out the struts he gave me, and realized I have a set of '99 tall front coils too. I bought a set of 4, and only used the rears. I had forgotten I had them, and first thought they were the TRD struts my FIL gave me. If anyone saw that post- I'm an idiot.
ANYWAY, I figured what the hell- lets try the '99 talls with my 1/2" spacer. I'm VERY happy with the outcome, and may even take the 1/2" spacer out. When I say "1/2"", I'm referring to the lift height- the actual spacer is about 3/8" thick/tall.
https://vimeo.com/201491555
I may still go for the TRD coils, because I'd like to be running no spacer at all.
I will eventually have a winch, but they really don't weigh much with synth line, so the weight is negligible.

Just took it for a drive.
1) Holy shitballs it rides amazing.
2) It settled quite a bit since I dropped it on its weight, and I have some trimming to do tomorrow!
I think the YY/YB TRD coils would be 100% perfect, so that's currently my near-future goal.

I think I found out Apple built in a slimming feature into the new iPhone 7+. My wheels are nice and slimmed. Wtf.
ec9f9fdc253bd7b299de80c8f006fc6e.jpg

The '99 tall coils with a 1/2" spacer put me about 1.25" lower than I was with the stock 250k mile '97 springs and 3" spacers. I love the ride now, and I feel a lot better about not having the front suspension maxed out all the time. The pre-load 2.5" ToyTec spacer cause the stock shocks to be maxed out just sitting on the ground. Obviously the 40k mile Bilsteins are a HUGE improvement over the 250k mile Tokicos too. I'm pretty content with the front height, but I don't like how much rake I have now. I also really want to see where the TRD YY/YB coils would put me. I'd also like to try either ToyTec 3" coils, or OME 906 coils. My wife doesn't like it being lower, but too bad.

I left the spare tire out when I took it out over a year ago, because I'm not sure it would do me much good- being so much smaller than the other 3. I put it back up there last night to try to get the back end settled any little bit!
Been talking to a member here that has a set of TRD coils he will be selling soon, so hopefully I can grab those from him. We'll see.

Edit- those pictures are with about 200lbs of kiddos in the back seat.
