Tyler James Inc's OEM+ '97 Limited

Truck looks great man!

Tundra coils, I'd personally say no, they are a very heavy spring rate and will be super stiff, small bumps will still be ok if they're the progressives like I had but if you hit a big pot hole fast the truck won't take the hit to well and it will feel like you broke something every time... I went from the oem progressive coil's on bilstiens take off an 05 I think (don't remember the code) to an older fabtech 2.5" coilover and it was a night and day difference. Went from feeling like a ricer with the spring cut to a caddilac.

Also, where did you get your center caps for you level8 MK6's I have the same ones in gold and really want to go to the trd logo.

Thanks a lot for the input. I don't like the sound of a harsh ride, and- being built for a heavier/V8 Tundra- that's not surprising at all. At this point, I would rather have a harsher ride(and be at the height I want) than have spacers, and I won't have $800+ for coilovers anytime soon.
I'd love having coilovers for many reasons- adjustability being a huge reason, of course.
My wife has a business that involves using a vinyl cutting machine, so I designed and cut the center cap overlays myself. Each cap has a solid dark gray overlay, and then a matte black overlay with the TRD cut out from it. It gives it a really nice finish to have the TRD a little recessed looking. I can design and cut for you any design you would like. PM me if you are interested in that, and I'd be happy to make something for you [emoji1360]

Dang man such a clean and upkept rig!

Thank you! I love taking care of it and keeping it nice. Just feels good to me ☺

Missed out on the TRD coils, so now I'm looking for opinions on front coils.
It might have been for the better, because I'm really enjoying my new plush ride, and think the TRD might have been too firm for me now.
I'm considering the 881, but the "average lift height" of 1.75-2" is kind of- subjective? Maybe subjective isn't the right word, but dependent on what coils you started with. I.e.- I only dropped 1 3/8" when I swapped my '97 coils plus 2.5" spacer for the '99 tall. That implies the '99 tall springs are ~1" taller than the '97's- which is about average I believe. I'd like to know how much lift I would see from the 881 over my '99 tall coils. I'd hope to see 1.5". Then I could remove my 1/2" top plate spacer, and still be 1" taller in the front than where I am currently.
I was kind of excited about an OEM coil, but again- I think it may be firmer than I want now.
Any input on the 881's would be appreciated!

If you like the 99 tall coils then why not get the ride height adjustable Bilsteins to dial in the height?

I really like my Tundra TRD coils, paired them with OME 906 coils in the rear with Bilsteins. It rides so much better than before the lift and soaks up small bumps much better. I got them for the progressive rate and load carrying as I have since put on a bumper and winch. For me they have been great and not harsh - and I am carrying less weight in the front with my 4 banger.

You should come over Saturday the 4th and go wheeling with the CO Landcruisers. I will let you drive it.

Hm, that's good to know, thanks for the input.
Oh man, that's quite an offer- I'm not sure if I am actually even able to turn down an invitation to Bend [emoji41] My rig isn't ready for much off-road, but I'd love to come over there. Where exactly are you guys goin? And thank you for the invite and offer to take your rig for a spin. Definitely would like to feel how the TRD coils ride.

Well, for no reason other than the fact I already have these Bilsteins, and new coils are cheaper than new adjustable billys. Told my FIL last night I put them on, and he goes "those only have MAYBE 25k on them". They also have a lighter dampening than the adjustable 5100's, so my ride would be firmer. Not that I would have a problem with that, I'm just throwing it out there. He replaced them with adjustable 5100's, and he did that because TRD specs these too light for his preference.
All that said, I suppose I should consider the adj 5100's.

AssBurns After looking at Wheelers, I think the D558 might be my ticket! Sounds like the perfect shock for me, and I like that it has the HD wiper/seal vs the std Bilstein plastic boot.
And the price is comparable to new coils, so thanks a lot for making me reconsider [emoji1360] I think having the softer springs up front will help a lot off-road as well, as the rear of our rigs tends to flex much more than the front. Like I mentioned earlier in my thread- I'd like to balance the flex a little more than the average 3rd gen I see flexing.

Glad I can be of assistance to you. Also depending on the type of driving you do, you may want to consider the heavier valved Tundra 5100's. It will help on the bigger hits and probably feel a little more stable on the road, while not limiting your flex. Just something else to consider.

Yeah AssBurns I was wondering about that too. Have you personally experienced the two shocks with the same coils? Kind of hard to compare the two shocks when dealing with different springs as well.

I have not experienced the Tacoma/4Runner Bilstiens at all, but from hearing folks on hear talk about them it seems that they are a bit too soft for our application. I run the Tundra 5100's with the 620lbs Eibach coils (which from what I've read are about 50# higher spring rate over stock) and bottomed out constantly. So I wouldn't want softer valving than what I already had. I'm not even running a bumper and it was too soft, so I couldn't imagine running a winch and bumper.

Okay, cool. I think the Tundra would be the way to go then. My buddy is gonna buy my 2.5" spacers and the TRD Tundra Bilsteins, so I should be able to order those soon. Pretty stoked on those.

My 881's rode like rocks on new OME sport comfort shocks (these are the soft shocks). Once I added a bumper, winch w/metal line it softened up quite a bit and takes the trail bumps pretty good. But on the road its like driving on rocks when you hit a speed bump or pot hole.

I think you would be happy with the 99's on some adjustable billies over the 881's.

JayRolla thanks a lot for that input too [emoji1360] I'm 100% confident in the '99's on Tundra Billies now [emoji41]
I can't believe I forgot I had them. Haha

This is one of my favorite builds on here. You're doing some great work here. I hope to see it in person one day.
Wow, thank you so much! I really appreciate that.
We got our Boxer in Eagle, ID over 6 years ago. It was down this crazy canyon road called Jack Ass Gulch. It was The Hills Have Eyes kinda creepy. The breeders house was at the bottom of the canyon, and was the only house around. Super weird.
Then, the breeder we found our Cane Corso at was in Preston, ID! She met my wife in Boise, so that was nice. Anyway, I'll keep you in mind if we happen to be in the area!

Where did you get your '99 Highlander coils from?

Also, what year Tundra billys do we need for the T4R?

I believe I got the full set of coils from a member here- it's been about 2 years since I got them, so I have no recollection of who I got them from.
These are the adjustable Tundra 5100 shocks-

I just put the 881's on my '97 with 3/8" top plate spacers and got about 2-1/4" inches of lift in all, so sans spacers 1-3/4" sounds about right.

Really pleased with the ride though, but that's coming off the worn out stockers.
