UCA help

How do I separate my upper ball joint I have pickeld fork it.. But how do I get off the steering knuckle

I used a 3 jaw puller on mine.

I cut the top off the ball with a Dremel tool (and hacksaw when that broke), and then used a large socket on the top to press it out with the 3 jaw puller. I put a bolt in the top of the socket to give the puller screw something to set on.

Soak it with penetrating oil, and then put some pressure on it with the puller and hit it around the edges with a hammer. Give the top of the puller a smack too if you can get on it. Then tighten it some more. Mine were tight, but they came out using a puller just like the one you have.

Then, I bought the ball joint kit from Harbor Freight, which won't work on its own, but does have the spacers you need to use the press to put the new ones in.

And, it just so happens I took a few pictures. :cheers:

Cut off:

Large Socket (this worked, but one just a little larger would have been better, an impact socket that size would probably be ideal, with the thicker walls)

Pressing the new one in with the HF junk:

Run down to your local autoparts store and rent ya one of these guys, ball joint press....

I usually cut stud off even with the top of the ball part of the joint also, just to make it easier to deal with the tool.

Take a dremel and cut this off:

Then get a socket (I used a 27mm because it fit perfect) and the ball joint seperator with the 4wd adaptor kit from O'Reilly. They'll charge you a deposit (~$200), but you'll get it back when you return it. Set it up like this then...

It's a tight fit, but I didn't have to take my spindle off the LBJ to do this.

Harbor Freight is going to refund me for the one I bought too. That damn thing looks like it's been bought and returned AT LEAST half a dozen times. It's beat to hell. :boxer:

I always thought the uppers required a shop type of press like the rear axle bearings, but I guess I was wrong. Good to hear for me though if I ever need to replace mine or feel the need to do so.

You can them do rear bearings if you get the right press.

Update... Got one side done.. So we get to the other side going way smoother then passenger side. But when depressing ball joint we forgot to take out the damn clip so we broke a open end wrench..
