UGENT need help with 3rd member

so theres been a whining sound coming from the rear of my 4runner. at first i though it was my rear wheel bearings. Took it to a friend since i dont have the space to work on my car. he worked on it and come to find out it was my 3rd member. I set out on a mission to go find a used one at the salvage yards and finally did. I brought it home today and found out the flange is totally different.

So my question is will this fit or do i need to go return it?

i have an 2006 v6 4runner sport edition 2wd. the 3rd member that i got from the yard was from a 4th gen. I was there and watch them pulling it off.

Today is your lucky day my friend. I swapped my 3rd member for one from ECGS but I ordered one with a "harmonic flange" by accident. It bolted right in no issues there, the bolts I think thread into the flange instead of clamping it with nuts from what I remember. I emailed ECGS about this and they said the harmonic style flange was apparently used on 2wd 4Runners evidently they had a driveline vibration. They said as long as it bolts in it should be fine. I've run mine for a couple thousand miles no issues other than boulders scraping the flange when rock crawling.

Ah, but you are swapping from a 2wd flange to a 4wd flange...

You could get a driveline vibration then.

ah, ok i see now. yes mine is a 2wd and the other came off a 4wd. looks like i might need to drive back 3hrs to return it. I specifically asked if the 4wd was the same as the 2wd and they said yes.

may i ask how much did you pay for the new one? Did you have to pay for the return shipping for the core? I took a quick glance at the ecgs site and i think they charge a core fee. I should have asked question on the forum first before going out and getting the part.

I swear people on forums are more help than the "specialist" the people that are suppose to know these things.

Its around $800 all said and done with their oil and shipping. ECGS gets a shipping discount so they can send you a return label in the box which makes it easy.

Definitely get the solid pinion spacer option.

800 isn't bad for a newly rebuild one. salvage yard charged me $500 and another wanted $650 but dont know if its for 4wd or 2wd.

Here's another vote for ECGS. I got one from them and it's been fine. They are a good company.

what gear ratio am I suppose to pick?

3.73 is the stock ratio. But you can re-gear it if your want.

I recently paid 275.00 for a carrier with 70k on it shipped to my door, found it on car-part.com.

Divide the number of teeth on the ring gear by the number of teeth on the pinion gear for the gear ratio.

Now would be a good time to regear if you wanted for larger tires, it would cost the same.

I do not understand the problem. Why can't you simply take the flange you want and put it on the new 3rd member? I do it all the time. Just make sure that the nut is staked and you have similar bearing preload and you will be fine.

I was thinking the same, but i already returned the new one, so no go on that. plus for an extra $100+ i can have a new rebuilt one. so i just went with that option.

I have 270k on it, trying to get this thing to over 400k before giving up on her.
