UltraSwing T4R Exclusive Preorder Deal

Cool that it's a bike rack, but I still haven't had anyone successfully explain to me why you'd want to move your tire up with a stock bumper.

1. You're adding weight and complication, blocking your camera, and adding an extra step to opening your hatch.

2. A 285/70/17 tire fits in the stock location.

3. If you look under your truck, you'll see that your hitch receiver will drag before you hit your spare. Any hitch mount will decrease your AOD even more.

So why do I keep seeing these? Are they just for looks? Guys that run bumpers with increased clearance and relocated receivers are moving the tire when it becomes a limiting factor in departure, not because it looks cool. Talk to guys that live full time with a swingout, they'll tell you that they're a pain in the ass and their wife hates it.

Well, all of this is accurate. The reason I've been looking for this is because I'm carrying bikes all the time. My bike rack is on the 4R almost constantly, so I'm dealing with the extra weight, camera blockage, extra step to open hatch issues regardless. A swingout makes it so much easier to maintain access to my cargo area when I'm at a trailhead or out camping. The way this attachment goes in the receiver, my AOD will improve from having just the bike rack (not that it's a big concern for me anyway). I also like to carry one fuel container, two water containers, and a hi-lift. If I can get those on this swingout instead of on the roof/inside the vehicle, that is appealing to me.

I agree that it's not without drawbacks. I do think it has appeal to a lot of users, though. Just depends on what you use your 4R for. I am off road a lot, but not in places where I need armor. A bumper would be extreme overkill for someone like me.

If you follow the link in the original post, they have that picture. I also just found them on IG and that had some more information. I'm sold. Placing my order shortly.

@ KingTaco, thanks!

Here's a pic from their site for this thread:

I expected to see some more action on this thread. I'm still really close to placing an order. Is there a reason people are shying away from this that I'm not seeing?

It's obviously still a good bit of money for something that makes your vehicle longer and heavier, but I would like to relocate my spare, and I have always wanted to be able to swing my bike rack out. Looks like adding an attachment for fuel and water cans would be pretty simple, too.

More then likely it's the price, at that price a few hundred dollars more you can get a basic rear bumper with a tire carrier. If it was sub $500 I'm quite sure you would have more buyers.

Another benefit of it is that depending on the terrain you are in if the tire is on the bottom of the vehicle you could run into the issue of dropping onto it and puncturing the tire/damaging the rim

Saw the Ultra-Swing in person at Expo East a few weeks back and I was sold. I think it's a great alternative for those that want a rear tire carrier as well as a method to carry extra fuel/water/hi-lift. Personally, I like the look of the factory bumpers and this was a great comprise to get the functionality without significant modification.

For those who may be worried about rattling, or loose fitment, I can tell you it is rock solid. That was my biggest concern and once I saw it and operated it in person, I was hooked!

Thanks for the detail. FWIW I just ordered mine and had a bunch of questions. rigdsupply was patient, helpful, and quick to respond.

Love the idea. Dont want/need a full bumper but would like easier access to tire and hatch access when a bike rack is on.

Only thing keeping me from pulling the trigger is the price. Just like the other brand out there, the price point is just higher than what I would want to spend. Maybe one day find a gently used one.

But all of those things can be accomplished without moving the tire...? You're talking about a hitch rack for your bike and accessories. Those already exist and you don't need to relocate your tire to use one.

UltraSwing with ladder and Rotopax

Pretty certain that modification is necessary for V8 Gen 4s only. 5th Gen looks plug and play. Departure angle sacrifice looks minimal to me. There are definitely pros and cons, but I can't come up with a better way to do it without spending $3000+ for a bumper. I wish it sat a little closer to the lift gate, but I suppose you can always use that space to mount some other things.

Speaking of other things to fill that bit of space...

We've had a lot of questions about ladders. We mounted up the new C4 Fab Summit Hatch Ladder and it clears perfectly with room to still mount a Rotopax on the UltraSwing

none of this applies to the 5th gen, right?

i wish someone would make one that just bolts right to where the hitch bolts to, i hate the departure angle sacrifice you have to make with these but don't want the weight of a full bumper

That's correct. This only is an issue on certain hitches found on some 4th Gen V8s.

We actually worked on a design that was a direct bolt-on hitch replacement, the lame part of it was on a lot of the 5th gens you actually had to remove the bumper to access the top holes to remove the hitch. By the time you go through all that trouble, just mounting in the hitch and being able to remove when not needed made a lot more sense for most users we were looking to accommodate.

Relocating the tire is the least important part of it for me, but I've never been able to find anything like this that lets the bike and accessories all swing away. That's the key part I want. The Wilco only lets the tire arm swing out. That and others like it give you another receiver for a bike rack, but the rack stays stationary. There is a Yakima bike-only rack that swings away, but it's $500-600 on it's own, and definitely couldn't handle 100lbs of water and fuel slapped to it. $825 shipped to get all those options and support a small business is appealing to me.

I won't argue that it's really useful to move the spare tire. I agree with your points, and hope I never have to see it at all. This just lets me carry my crap around the way I want it.

They should add some holes to the straight tube behind the tire. That way you could pin some sttachments to it that extend out next to the tire for thinks like a hi lift holder or for Jerry cans or whatever.

Here's a closer view of the holes and a basic Rotopax mounting plate option:
