Uncomfortable throttle.

Hey there folks. So yesterday while driving back from some trails I noticed that my throttle was acting up. When I went to slow down, by just taking my foot off the gas to coast, but i kept my speed. I then put the clutch in, and the engine started to climb fast to redline. I eventually made it home, luckly it's not that far of a drive. I let the truck cool down for about four hours. I started it up, and it was idling a little high, around 1,200 rpm. I then gave the gas peddle a little tap, and the rpma shot up to around 3000 and stayed there. I watched it for about 10 seconds and got a little nervous because it wasn't going down, and didn't sound the best. So everybody how bad our we?

Getting some of the obvious stuff out of the way but are you sure the throttle/cable isn't sticking/binding?

So I just went outside and gave it a look over. The throttlecable is sticking. Would that mean that just the little spring might need to be replaced?

Is it the throttle body or the cable itself?

Pull the cable off the throttle body, its similar to a bicycle's hand brake. Start truck up, rev engine via the throttle body, see if it still sticks or not.

I would make sure you figure out what the actual cause is before replacing the throttle return spring. While it may be the spring itself, if its something else (like the cable, throttle body as suggested, etc.), you could end up masking the problem with anew or tighter spring.

Another thing you can do is have someone rev the engine while you observe from the engine compartment. When/if it sticks then maybe you will have a better idea of how it's getting stuck. I would try different things (like flyinhawaiian's idea) to help you narrow it down. ....process of elimination.

Ok so I went out and lubed up the springs in there. Took off the throttle cable, rev'd the motor a lil bit by finger, and it seems to idle down. When I reattached the throttle cable, it wants to shoot back up.

Ok update, it's the throttle cable itself. It's frayed at the end next to the peddle. So that is preventing it from closing. Now I gotta hunt one of these things downn.

Glad to see you figured it out. .....especially since it had the potential to cause a serious issue while driving.

Can't help you on the source of a replacement but if you do find one (new), please share. While otherwise operable, mine is a bit stretched from age (almost more slack than I am able to adjust for now).
