under hood insulation

seems most cars i've owned including my 2000 4runner have had insulation under the hood,I notice my '97 limited came without any.....is the purpose to deaden sound or to stop engine heat from bubbling the paint??anyone added this?

Try Summit Racing or Crutchfield and look at the Dynamat hood liner product. I have it on two of my cars and it does a great job.

depending on who you talk to it can serve multiple purposes. It is used to suppress fires (on composite/ fiberglass hoods), keep heat in the engine bay, sound deadening to some extent, prolong the life of clear-coat.

My 97 came without, but I noticed that later ones had it. The OEM part is expensive. I find this vehicle pretty quiet without it...not sure how much quieter it'd get by adding that mat. The Dynamat idea in interesting....depends on how the Dynamat takes heat.

My 99 has one that came stock. Check around on the forum, someone may be doing a partout and have one to sell. You can get the tabs at the dealer for fairly cheap.

On my '99 it was nasty so I removed it. Haven't noticed a difference yet. I ~think~ it was just for sound control. I intend to replace it eventually.
