Underbody Rust - How bad is it?

When you look at it again take a big screwdriver and probe hard at every bad rusted area to see how strong the steel is if the steel is still strong
and not rusted away to bad it can be cleaned up and then treat the entire frame with a good rust prohibitor,
BUT you will have a lot of work on your hands to do the job!!
Also be sure to find out if and when the timing belt has been replaced, it should be replaced every 90,000 miles,
so if it's never been done it's way overdue, if it was done only once at 90,000 miles it will be due to be replaced immediately after you buy it,
and don't just take their word it has been done recently, make them give you paperwork/documentation to prove it!!
If you still decide to buy it use both the rust issue and possible timing belt replacement as a bargaining tool to get the price much lower!!!
You'll be looking at around $750 to get someone to replace the timing belt, so even if you do it yourself if possible use that price as you goal in bargaining on the price,
the rust repair if all the steel is solid I would think at least $1000.

One other point on the rust, be sure to check around the right front wheel/control arm attachment area of the frame, that is where the condensation drain for the AC drips down on the frame and is a major rust area on Snowbelt 4Runners!!

I'm assuming it's an exhaust manifold leak?
If so these V8s are known to have the exhaust manifolds to develop a crack/s, but it's not a big issue and will not hurt anything,
usually just a ticking sound and some owners just live with the ticking sound but others replace the manifolds or upgrade to headers because the ticking bothers them,
both are costly, the headers a bit more but you gain a bit of HP with going this route,
I would use that info as a bargaining chip to get the price a bit lower to help pay for replacing the manifolds, even if you choose to not fix the issue.
Ask your mechanic to give you quote to fix the manifolds so you know the cost when doing your bargaining process.

Mine is from MD as well and looks about just like that. Keep in mind if you want to lift it the cam bolts will most likely be seized. Major PITA. I had to cut mine out with a sawzall. If I would have known I probably would have looked for another vehicle.

what do yall think about the rust condition of this 4runner?
It’s an 07’ v8 4wd at 182k. Im a total noob with cars so I dont know what anti-rust product i should get, there are so many! Appreciate yall’s help

That looks fantastic underneath! Where are you located? If it's someplace where you need to worry about rust, I'd research your rust preventative options (NOT a rubberized undercoating!), from what I've seen on here Fluid Film is a fantastic product, but you have to be extremely thorough when you apply it.

The frame looks to be in excellant condition, I don't think it need much done to it at all except preventive maintenance, the only rust I see is on the exhaust, which is normal but may need attention at some point if you see any major rusted out areas other than surface rust on the exhaust.
The only concern I do see is the fluid leak on the front drive shaft and where it would be coming from, could be a big issue or not depending on what's leaking.

I'm based in San Antonio, tho this was bought further closer to the coast in Victoria, TX. Am I right to assume that all those reddish patches are some form of rust? If so do I apply anti-rust on those parts inly or do I apply everywhere underneath that is metal? Thanks for answering to noob questions.

Would the procedure be different for the rusted exhaust compared to other unrusted areas? I was looking at Por-15 Stop Rust kit ( https://www.por15.com/Stop-Rust-Kit )and their Rust Remover ( https://www.por15.com/POR-15-Rust-Remover ) and Im contemplating if I should get both, since rust remover sounds like it's function is to remove, while the stop rust kit is to prevent rust once cleared. Please help me with easy lingo

There's nothing you can put on the exhaust that won't burn off, this is why the exhaust is rusted to begin with, all exhaust on any vehilce
no matter what location you live in will rust except stainless steel and even it will rust a little bit after some time, but if it's still solid I don't
see where it will be an issue for quite a while.
You mentioned/asked above about "little red spots" the only spots I see on your frame is spots from mud or dirty water drying on it, as I
mentioned your frame look to be in excellant condition, I can't see any rust on the frame anywhere in your photos not even any minor
surface rust, if you do have any rust one of the first places affected is usually the radiator crossmember that has the tiedown/recovery loops
on it, if it looks like the rest of the frame you have no rust on your frame, IMHO!!
That being said I see no reason for you to have to remove any rust since I don't see any, a good preventative is all you need, just follow any
instructions that comes with the preventative on basic surface cleaning of dirt, etc. before applying it.

Thank you for your advice. The red patches Im referring to is all the stuff that's on the exhaust. So now I have more questions lol
1. how do I do to preventative stuff?
2. What do I need, and where do I apply them and how?
3.Do I do the preventative on both frame+ exhaust?
4. Also, where's the radiator crossmember?
5. You also mentioned some leakage on the front drive shaft, can you list out some potential issues underlying it? Much appreciated

Is Krown all I need? What do you think about por15 rust stop kit? Are they the same thing or different? As far as applying Krown, is it as simple as spraying and letting it dry or are there more to it such as cleaning before and topcoating after? Thanks for dealing with a car noob
