Hahaha....how did I plant this? I thought we were talking under car!

But I'll still bite. I put a junkyard GM hoodlight in the truck and while the light is adequate, I'd prefer light towards the rear where it's at currently plus light nearer the front.

Hmmm, I've seen people use strings of LEDs to get what the light where they want. Or how about some mini-drop light, something retractable within the engine bay to be able to shine the light just where you want?

Ooh, how about a magnetic light that has a rechargeable battery- with the recharger run via the truck battery? It could be underhood- I think there's still room on the right fender. How bad would it mess up the light battery to have it on constant recharge? It would have to be weather and heat resistant...

I wouldn't want a ton of light, my husband would want more than I would...guess that would depend on any one person's particular eyes.

Hey do this and you'll see a lot of light in the form of electrical archs. What I see is a guy using a screwdriver, no safety gloves on what is probably a live circuit.

I put in the old gm one also, however mine came out of an old truck, and the surburbans had them too. they come with a wind up cord built in, it will reach from my engine compartment and easily to the opposite rear wheel. I swapped the bulb for an LED

I've had that light for 4 years and it gets used all the time. Work, home, camping. A 5AH battery easily lasts 12 hours on full brightness.

I looked for a photo of one hanging under a hood. I would have taken one of mine but it's on a job.

As far as the photo goes, if we're gonna make assumptions, I'd assume that he's got the light hanging there because the sub-panel is dead. He's changing out a breaker and that's almost always done with the panel dead. Also most basements have lighting which would make me assume that he's using the flashlight because the power is down. Unless that breaker happens to be the circuit that the basement lighting is on. lol

I have no practical purpose for under car lights, yet, but I found this underbody 6-pack that looks interesting and is available in a few colors - for rock lights, white is obviously the way to go, but I could throw a few underhood... nice for accent lighting too

I think maybe a strip light or the under car “kit” I linked above mounting a few of those under the hood either on a rocker switch or a weathertight plunger switch. Grabbing power from underwood would make this work regardless of ignition state. The old school single dim bulb underhood doesn't cut it, but coupled hand torch (below) maybe that's good enough.

I already have a rechargeable light in the car, it’s worth it’s weight in gold to me. I use it daily, but your idea is intriguing.

What I see is the breaker is turned off!! No gloves needed. On position is to center of breaker box, off to outside.

I see one breaker turned off, with an entire panel energized. So yep you need PPE..

I was tired of working in my own shadow and installed a small light bar under the hood with a little rocker switch.
real simple and it works well.
